My favorite movie is an anthology. When you have a collection of short films all bundled together, they provide the ultimate ROI to the audience. Don't like one of the stories? You can simply remove it during a short run or skip to the next issue. Either way is much better than a two-hour movie that starts tearing you down in the first scene. Anthologies are very rare in television, however, because networks and broadcasters have learned how attached fans get to the same characters and stories, causing them to run these shows on the ground.

Heroes, Stranger Things, Star Trek: Discovery…what do all these shows have in common? They were designed to be anthologies that would change things up each season, but their early success meant we were stuck with the same cast for years as the show got worse. It's not just a complete anthology show; in fact, the greatest horror series ever made!

Meet the Cryptkeeper

Tales from the Crypt fully embraces its anthology format, each episode focusing on different characters and different horror stories. Bringing them all together is our host, Cryptkeeper. He's a bilious, hilarious corpse of a character brought to life by a small army of puppy actors. The show originated on HBO, and its creators embraced the fact that it didn't have to abide by any of the television network's restrictive standards. So, the episodes were filled with foul language, nudity, sex, and more buckets of blood than you can shake a body bag at.

Small horror fans should know that it is almost impossible to overestimate the popularity of Tales from the Crypt and its stupid boss. Despite all the blood, gore, and animals, the show was a hit with the kids, including my little one. Thus, it received two spinoffs aimed specifically at children: Tales From the Cryptkeeper (children's cartoon Saturday Morning) and Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House (weird game show). If that seems strange, this was around the same time that Kenner was selling toys based on it Terminator 2 again Aliens directly to children. What can I say? The 90s were weird, man!

With his endless rants, catchphrases, and constant laughs, Cryptkeeper sets the tone for a show that has dark humor running through its veins at every turn. This adds serious entertainment value and helps position the show as a simple (but fulfilling) experience for horror fans. Not in a state of high panic and don't have time for two hours of mental fun? You can always count Tales from the Crypt delivering a great piece of horror entertainment in less than 30 minutes.
