Amidst the big comic announcements, Apple quietly unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming series, The Neuromancer. Fans of William Gibson's classic novel have been waiting over 40 years to see the definitive cyberpunk novel get the adaptation it deserves. First announced in 2024, fans were excited about the announcement, but the resulting silence made them nervous. Time and time again, Hollywood has tried to adapt the novel, and each time, it never happened. Finally, we not only have a release date, January 22, 2027, but we have a trailer.
The Neuromancer it looks incredible, and the way cyberspace is kept in low-res and invisible glasses is Gibson's descriptions from the novel. This is not the same at all Tron or The Matrixit's close, well, The Shadowrun again Cyberpunk 2077both were heavily influenced by Gibson's vision. Also, a cyberpunk story, relatively straightforward: it's about looting.
An Unfiltered Novel
The series stars Callum Turner as Case, the leading criminal there, and Briana Middleton as Molly, the razor-girl (re: assassin), and Mark Strong as Armitage, a government employee who sends them to retrieve a module containing a digital version of Case's mentor. Nothing is ever that easy as the mission reaches betrayal, a race against time, and a super smart AI gets involved.
William Gibson's novel has been considered “unfilmable” with several failed attempts to bring it to the big screen. Mel Gibson, Hayden Christensen, Liam Neeson, Mark Wahlberg, are some of the stars who have received offers over the decades. Gibson gave his blessing to several different scripts, but whether it was cost, time, or getting a finished script, they all fell through.
As far as cyberpunk stories go, the plot is simple. Case and Molly get the team together, pull off a heist, and save the day (sort of). Gibson's writing is exciting with more action than you'd expect, and in fact, it almost reads like you're watching a live action movie. However, it seems that he is cursed.
40 Years of Failed Adaptation
Even the Marvel Comics graphic novel only covered the first two chapters of the novel and then it was canceled. We're used to comedy being filmed after a sci-fi series is cancelled, but for someone who can't even get to the heist itself it's sad. The Neuromancer is one of the definitive cyberpunk novels, if not the most important in the development of the entire genre.
Cyberpunk has been going through a revival lately, with Cyberpunk 2077 overcome a strong start to become an award-winning hit, anime spinoff, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners gets a second season, Ghost in the Shell it's back, and there's something new Blade Runner I'm on my way. It's always good when there's more to sci-fi than space opera and dystopian futures.
AppleTV has become the home of sci-fi. The beast, The foundation, To All Humanity, Separationthe list goes on. In addition The Neuromancer on the list, and so far all the videos look incredible, turning the streaming service into a must-have for sci-fi fans. Now that The Neuromancer it becomes real, maybe one day we will find out Snow Crash and, although not cyberpunk, Hyperion.
