Serena, Venus Williams Wimbledon Doubles Withdrawal

Serena Williams will no longer be able to compete in the Wimbledon doubles with this year's sister, Venus Williams.

“I'm sad that I have to withdraw from doubles,” Serena, 44, announced on Instagram on Saturday, July 4, along with a video showing the athlete gently moving her right leg, which is almost completely bandaged. “Coming back to compete was a gift, and the opportunity to play with @venuswilliams meant the world to me again. I did everything I could to get fit, but unfortunately my knee is not ready to compete.”

The tennis star went on to say, “I am very grateful to the tournament director, Jamie Bakerand the entire tournament team for giving me every opportunity to play here. Thank you to the fans for your amazing support and making this comeback meaningful… All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you…”

Serena returned to tennis in June, coming out of retirement to meet him Victoria Mboko in a doubles match Erin Routliffe again Nicole Melichar-Martinez. (Mboko, 19, was injured which forced the two to withdraw.)

“The Queen's Club feels like the perfect place to start this next chapter,” Williams said in a statement Athletic on June 1. “Grass has given me some of the most important moments in my career, and I'm very happy to be back competing in one of the most prominent sports divisions.”

In her much-anticipated lead-up to Wimbledon, Serena also entered the Berlin Open on the sidelines. Karolina Muchova. (These two ended up failing Guiliana Olmos again Erin Routliff(e6-4, 6-4.)

Serena then reclaimed her Wimbledon in her first singles match in nearly four years against Maya Joint, during which she turned her knee late in the first set of the much-anticipated match. (Joint eventually won the match 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.)

“Great to be back on grass at @wimbledon,” she wrote on Instagram following her first round loss. “Thank you so much for the amazing card – and thank you so much for letting my daughters see that it's never too late to pursue what you love.”

In addition to sharing a video of the athlete struggling to walk on her right knee, Serena also posted photos of medical syringes filled with fluid taken from her knee and snapshots of what appears to be a small part of her rehabilitation process.

“The shot of the injections shows the fluid they took out of my knee after my singles match…yikes!” Serena continued with the caption. “The good news is that my knee doesn't have to swell or collect as much fluid again. The bad news is, as hard as I try, I couldn't get it to double up.”
