DC Quietly Accepts Judgment From Marvel

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

For the better part of a century, there has been a creative war between two powerhouse publishers: Marvel and DC. While there are plenty of other comic book creators, these are the biggest names in the game, each amassing millions of fans. Eventually, the battle jumped from the page to the silver screen, with each side releasing their own superhero movie. For a long time, Marvel reigned supreme: not only is the MCU the most popular cinematic universe ever created, but it surpassed the DCEU, which crashed and burned in its attempt to become a grim and evil alternative to Marvel.

Last year, however, James Gunn launched the DCU with Supermanhis film about the most famous hero. The film was a hit, earning more than both MCU summer films (Thunder Lights again Fantastic Four: First Steps). It looks like Marvel might have a worthy opponent, but now, it looks like the battle is already over. Gunn's new cinematic universe was already in trouble there Supergirl it became a critical and commercial bomb. Now, Gunn himself has confirmed that the DCU will not show anything at San Diego Comic Con's famous Hall H, where Marvel plans to make several big announcements.

Why Hall H Is So Important

So, what's so important about Hall H? Basically, this is home to the biggest presentations at San Diego Comic Con. Fans often line up a day in advance to get inside this 6,500-seat venue; there, they are treated like a bunch of special panels, trailers, and other previews courtesy of the big Hollywood studios. Historically, Marvel has made big announcements in Hall H, and this year is no exception. Fans attending SDCC can expect some big announcements about Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: A New Day, X-Men '97and more. Because of this, DCU fans were hoping that James Gunn would bring some big announcements of his own.

Unfortunately, that won't happen. While there will be other DC offerings elsewhere at SDCC (including immersive Lights experience and a DC booth with a Superman experience), there will be no DCU panels, reviews, or anything else in Hall H. James Gunn himself confirmed this while also explaining his thinking: that is, that he can generate hype for upcoming films for free through social media, but making a big splash at San Diego Comic Con will cost several million dollars. For the DC Studios co-CEO, the juice is not worth the squeeze.

It's All About Money

He's not wrong, of course: it's always been difficult to track how well marketing movies to SDCC attendees works, especially since almost every “exclusive” they show eventually ends up (legally or illegally) online. Also, this is the fourth year that Warner Bros. skip the Hall H hoopla, so Gunn's announcement may not seem so shocking. However, DCU fans are in for a treat because there are some big projects coming up, including Clayface again Tomorrow's Man. To follow SupergirlFailing that, this would be the perfect time to step up the DCU, but Gunn is content to play it safe and sound.

On the surface, this sounds like an admission of defeat for Marvel. Instead of building hype and creating its own narrative, the DCU is just letting Marvel have all the glory at the biggest convention in the world. Maybe this works: the most anticipated films like it Spider-Man: A New Day again Avengers: Doomsday they were always meant to earn more than that Supergirleven if it wasn't good. Still, anyway, if Gunn isn't willing to make the effort to market the cinematic universe, why should fans make the effort to check out future movies and shows?

When it comes to the ongoing battle between Marvel and DC, it seems clear that the house created by Stan Lee has already won 2026. But will it finally win the war? Maybe, maybe not. Kevin Feige is gambling everything Doomsdayand if that movie pans out, it could be the beginning of the end for the MCU. That would make 2027 the perfect year for Gunn to bounce back with killer content of his own. If this year has taught us anything about saving the DCU, though, it's this not Supergirl's job!
