For professional wrestling fans, it's easy to criticize when things go wrong or when the crescendo of a story fails to meet high expectations. The naysayers come in all the time and the criticism is often loud and extreme when those things happen.
It was safe to say that Saturday night's conclusion to the storyline between El Grande Americano and the Original El Grande Americano at AAA Lucha Libre International's Noche de Los Grandes exceeded expectations and cemented itself as one of the best wrestling events of the year.
The hype was palpable. El Grande Americano appeared on WWE and AAA shows and became a fan favorite in Mexico. Pro wrestling fans in the country chant for him and welcome him into the Lucha Libre culture. The original El Grande Americano was a villain hated by fans who booed him so much, turned middle fingers and backed off any momentum he would gain.

It all culminated in an extraordinary match of Mask vs. Mask in Monterey in front of a packed stadium. In the end, El Grande Americano defeated the Original El Grande Americano in a bloody contest. The real El Grande Americano was forced to remove his mask, revealing himself to be WWE superstar Chad Gable.
It was an open affair with Gable hitting El Grande Americano with a guitar shot to start the match, Rayo and Bravo took out the Creed Brothers and El Grande Americano put Gable through the table.
Both men pushed each other, trying to take off each other's masks before the end of the match. They were left covered in blood, battered and bruised at the end of it.

Pro wrestling fans universally agreed that it was one of, if not, the best match of the year.
“I put this mask on to continue wanting to learn the art of Lucha Libre to defeat all the Luchadores in the world that I hated, hated, hated,” Gable said after the match. “In the process of my journey, I learned everything I had to know about Lucha Libre, about Mexico, about AAA, Mexican people and Mexican culture.

“I'm man enough to admit it, I'm standing here in front of you, not as a mask, but as a man. And it hurts me to say this, it hurts me terribly, but with all the respect in the world, I will say that tonight, I could not overcome the spirit of Mexico.”

Gable later posted on Instagram that he was going to Italy. It's unclear what he'll do next, but WWE will host Clash in Italy in Turin on Sunday.
