Michael director Antoine Fuqua he explained why he is new Michael Jackson the biopic does not address the longstanding allegations of child sexual abuse against the star.
In an interview with Deadline published Sunday, April 26, Fuqua was asked if the dismissal of the allegations against Jackson “carried weight[ed] Is it difficult in your mind and in the studio?”
“It definitely happened for a while, because we had to rethink everything. It was a difficult time. [Producer] Graham [King], [screenwriter] John Logan and I bumped heads,” replied the director, “We had many meetings. But we clicked on it at the same time: The movie is called Michael so you should focus on Michael. Unless you really can't take your time, let's go back to the beginning and really show people who he was on stage. He is a hero on stage.”

Michael — playing the “Thriller” singer's nephew Jaafar Jackson — charts Michael's rise from being a member of the Jackson 5 before achieving solo success and becoming the King of Pop. However, the biopic ends in 1988, five years before he was first investigated by Los Angeles police amid allegations of abuse against a then 13-year-old. Jordan Chandler. No charges have been filed against Michael, who has denied the allegations; reached an out-of-court settlement with Chandler and the boy's parents after filing a lawsuit.
An earlier version of the Michael intended to cover the 1993 scandal, but the third act of the film was changed after the producers discovered that a clause in the contract with the Chandlers prohibited any family drama.
“It was important to walk the audience through the process of how he gets to where he's going in the second movie … so people can get a bigger picture of his personality and what shaped him,” Fuqua told Deadline.
“What we have seen, if you start there [with the accusations]some people don't know Michael, there's no context,” he continued. It was important that we go back and give them a journey to continue with Michael. There was also some abuse that he always faced emotionally and physically in that house with his father. If you don't do that, you won't understand him and where the story is going.”
Fuqua said there were a lot of shots that didn't work out Michael.
“We have come a long way. We passed the accusations of Jordan that we cannot use. We moved forward,” he said. “Maybe a year or two after that when things turned around for Michael.”
Michael was acquitted of child molestation charges during a trial in 2005. Since his death in 2009, there has been more speculation about the singer, including a 2019 HBO documentary.
