Jim Parsons opens up about her least enjoyable time starring in the hit TV series The Big Bang Theory.
“I look back now and I realize that in a lot of ways, some of the best times of my life, I was sad,” Parsons, who played Sheldon Cooper on the hit show, said during the performance. It's All Out with Jon Dean earlier this week. “I wasn't happy. I was depressed.”
He continued about his experience, “I felt that there were too many plates to keep in the air and that the success and the good things in life that happened were because of this overwork…discipline or whatever. Maybe, to a certain extent, that was true. I don't know. I can't say because I was.”
The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons, first airing on CBS for 12 years and ending on May 16, 2019. The show — which also starred Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Mayim Bialik, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar again Melissa Rauch – followed a group of best-friend physicists working at the California Institute of Technology as they navigate friendships, awkward relationships and budding romances.
Parsons, 53, has received a Golden Globe and multiple Emmy awards for her work on the show. Despite his many accolades, the actor revealed that his mental health makes it difficult for him to enjoy his success.

Getty Images“I wouldn't do that again for any money,” he said. It was stressful and sad at times.
He added, “It translated in part to a good work ethic, but it was basically irrational behavior. Yes, I was disciplined. Yes, I had a good work ethic, but a lot of it was because it was kind of OCD in nature. I had a list of things in my head that I needed to do in order to relax and know that I could do my job well, which I think was true.”
In the end, Parsons said that working so hard on such a successful show led to awards, but that he ultimately missed out on “tons of life” because of his singular focus. Still, he wouldn't change a thing.
“In the same way, I can't go back, I wouldn't be where I am now if I didn't have that period of life and somehow the nature of self-torture was part of it,” he explained, before adding that he has focused on how to find that work-life balance that doesn't work.
“It's evolving, and it's getting better all the time,” he added. “The better I feel, the healthier I feel.”

Parsons made a cameo appearance in a spinoff of the show, Young Sheldonhe admits in an interview on Today that it was a strange event.
“The Big Bang Theory it was always a live audience show too Young Sheldon it's a one-camera show, and I got to do it with Mayim — we both played Sheldon and Amy on the show — and doing it in that situation, it was different enough that it wasn't scary,” Parsons said during his March 2024 appearance on the hit morning show. Instead, it was really fun. It felt like the best little coda ever, and I was so grateful they asked us to do it.”
