The X-Files May Secretly Return to the Big Screen

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

It's a very exciting time to be X-Files fan right now. Next month, Chris Carter will release a director's single The X-Files: I Want to Believewhich is often considered the second worst in the franchise (the even worse the thing was that painful revival). But to the fandom's delight, the entire series is being rebooted, with Ryan Coogler serving as producer. After all, this is not just or anyone bringing the beloved series back to life; is the Oscar-winning writer and director behind the modern horror classic, They are sinners. If there is one you can restore X files in its former glory, this guy.

And make no mistake, restoration is much needed. The first one X-Files The series took off after Season 5, ending up with one of the worst finales in television history. The second film was a critical and commercial flop, and the revival was bad enough to be classified as a war crime. However, Coogler has the passion, drive, and (most importantly) talent to restore this spooky series to its former glory. It helps to go all out: the show's creator shot the pilot on 65mm film, and now he's thinking of giving this first episode a theatrical release.

The Dream of the '90s Lives on Hulu

Ryan Cooler's resume of X files replacing David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson entirely. Instead, our former FBI agents will be played by Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler. This show has its own separate line-up, where The X-Files used to be established and, later, closed. These new agents are tasked with reopening the division and investigating various unexplained phenomena. The show will be exclusive to Hulu and doesn't have a set release date yet, though it could hit the airwaves in 2026.

If it does, it will look perfect wonderful. That's because Coogler shot the test episode on 65mm film, which is extremely rare for television. Usually, things shot in this high quality are reserved for the big screen, and the showrunner is reportedly considering giving it a shot X-Files restart the driver for the theatrical release. Right now, Hulu is reportedly on the fence about making this happen, especially since they've only commissioned a pilot but haven't ordered a full series yet. When the pilot hits theaters, you'll want to see it on the biggest screen possible because Coogler hired an Oscar-winning cinematographer as well. They are sinners participant Autumn Durald Arkapaw shooting the first episode.

Will The X-Files Reboot Be Cancelled?

Even thought X-Files the reboot gets a series order depending on how well Coogler can impress Hulu's execs. As Slayer fans know all too well, the powers that be in the streaming world didn't like the highly anticipated first cut. Buffy reboot, needs a reboot. That reshoot didn't impress them, and the show was eventually canceled altogether. After the success of They are sinnersCoogler has a lot of star power and momentum going for him, but that may not be enough. By the way, it was cancelled Buffy series was again reboot of the most popular genre show from the '90s, led by another Oscar winner: Forever director Chloe Zhao.

Of course, i Buffy the series died a lot because it was difficult to create a reboot that matched the consistently high quality of the original show. That won't be a problem X fileshowever: the original show dropped in quality, and after that, what we got was an even worse movie, a short-lived revival. Fans have spent years hoping to find a truly great new persona for this once great sport. Is Ryan Coogler the man to give us? As Spooky Mulder himself might say, I want to believe.
