As an older, casual anime fan, I have mixed feelings about classic shows being rebooted or revived. For example, I really like him Dragon Ball Z Kai because it turns an iconic shonen into a dead-end, unfulfilling adventure. However, Sailor Moon Crystal he left me cold. It similarly cut out the infamous filler of the previous anime, but the new animation lost some of the original series' high appeal. Because of this, I was shocked when I heard that Ranma ½ it was starting to be repaired. I wondered, how well could the new system do the original, gender-inclusive art?
As it turns out, it's great! I was surprised, the new one Ranma ½ (2024) is a very faithful adaptation of the manga that retains all the franchise's trademark weirdness. The show has something of a personality divide: it has great messages about love, friendship, and family, but it also has some of the most serious and gory scenes you'll find outside of hentai. Oh, and did I mention that there's more nudity in any given season than you'll find in the past Playboy? A Tale of Two Species
The foundation of Ranma ½ that the young warrior, Ranma Saotome, promises to marry a beautiful lady. Just one problem: while training in China, Ranma and his father fall into a cursed well. Now, all it takes is a splash of cold water to transform Ranma from strapping male to loosely balanced female, and hot water to reverse it. This situation makes it difficult for Ranma to fit in when he lives with his unfaithful family and starts high school. But he slowly learns more about himself and women as he battles one strange new challenge after another.
In the best way, Ranma ½ it feels like the love child of two very different anime genres: slice of life and action/adventure. How does that work? Basically, Ranma is a warrior who always trains with his father, and is engaged (more or less) to the strongest girl in town. Together, the two should do a lot of normal brawling, settling arguments with one well-placed kick after another. But their main villains (like the karate gymnasts, the ice skaters, and even the seriously ill students) all have a sense of emptiness, local drama. In total, Ranma ½ it's like a cross between shows like Komi Can't Communicate again Dragon Ball Z.
It's a clever way to tell a story, which can easily prove to be overly boring or over-the-top. Against all odds, however, Ranma ½ it finds its place quickly and manages to tell a beautiful, vivid story unlike anything you've seen before.
Where Healthy Meets Luxury
Ranma ½ it is more than just a tale of two species; it's a tale of two tones. Most of the show is relatively good, with an incredibly engaging will-driven narrative, won't you love the story. The series is also filled with positive messages about friendship, dedication, self-acceptance, and more, offering fresh themes you wouldn't find outside of an after-school special. At the same time, this live show is incredibly funny, with Ranma baring her bare breasts for the longest running time. The juxtaposition is surreal, with the characters giving and receiving good life advice while showing off their birthday suit.
Actually, Ranma ½ able to walk the fine line between being healthy and stubborn. As mentioned above, the sugary-sweet messages about personal growth are subject to bittersweet after bittersweet moving breasts. At the same time, the show avoids overexposure: instead of sex scenes, we get endless scenes of characters bathing together. Oh, and nipples that were too full at first Ranma ½ they are completely absent here, a controversial creative choice. On the other hand, this makes important scenes a little (ahem) disturbing. On the other hand, making every woman look like a Barbie doll under her clothes is a disturbing taste!
Amazing Kinky Anime
New Ranma ½ it's very true to the original show; like most anime revivals, it's designed to cut out the annoying filler and serve as a faithful adaptation of the original manga. But I was too young when I watched the previous anime series, and I was too focused on all the boobies to notice something obvious: Ranma ½ it is deep, obvious, and very shocking kinky. Like, Ranma's gender-bending actions (forcing him to explore femininity while forcing his fiancée Akana to explore her sexuality) are just the beginning, and the series gets worse with each episode.
For example, one character turns into a pig when splashed with cold water; in animal form, he stalks Ranma's fiancee every night, making Euphoria's pet game seem humiliating. Later, some pig-related shenanigans have the boy wearing a day collar in human form while his new master tries to follow him. The whole show is filled with boys who want to dominate women and young men who get them, all the while Ranma finds love in showing off a beautiful woman's body. Mercifully, none of this witchcraft detracts from the character's development, but it does add an extra layer of extreme craziness to every second of its terrible runtime.
The Most Told Messianic Love Story Ever
Based on the description above, you might think so Ranma ½ especially a sex joke. However, this is a show that is ultimately driven by romance rather than food. While there are plenty of bitter shenanigans and kinky character moments throughout, the central story concerns Ranma and Akane's messy relationship. The characters have amazing chemistry and are able to strike a “will they, won't they” write romantic balance as they bounce from one episode to the next. This approach to building relationships feels remarkably modern, and the show will go down well with any anime aficionados who are fans of the “enemies to lovers” trope.
Ranma ½ ultimately, a show with a little something for everyone. It has fun characters, interesting life events, and some of the craziest fights you can find outside of Shonen. In addition, the show features a lot of nudity and weird sexual situations that you won't find outside of Cinemax.
