Although Douglas has not been saddened by the response to her book on the small screen, she has defended the genre, writing on her website, “I write romance. New adult, erotica, a little bit modern… Really whatever drives me right now. I believe that a good writer can explore any story in a way that will connect, and I don't set out to write every book. I like to break the rules, and I like to push myself out of my comfort zone.”

The author also stood by his opinion.

“I don't worry that much anymore, and I don't let other people's opinions hold me back,” he commented. “Be yourself, and OWN YOU. Do you know what that means? Speak up and be proud. Be who you are and good things will come. Most importantly, your happiness.”
