Parenting Influencer Accidentally Runs Son Over

Parent Advocate Kelly Hopton-Jones He opened up about the tragic incident of accidentally running over his young son Henry with his car.
“I can't even wrap my mind around how this situation could be different right now,” Hopton-Jones, 36, shared on Instagram on Wednesday, April 15. “It's so easy to start questioning everything.”
Hopton-Jones is a registered nurse who often shares parenting advice on her Hillside Farmhouse blog. She has two children with her husband, Brian Hopton-Jones.
In a shocking Instagram post, Kelly recalls how her son's life was put at risk “in the blink of an eye”.
“Today was the worst day of our lives,” he admitted. “Life can change in an instant. A parent's real nightmare happened to us today.”
Kelly explained that it “started like any normal day” when she took her daughter Lily to get donuts before her dance.
He wrote: “Brian lived at home with Henry and was going to meet us there. He helped Lily into the car and said goodbye between our car and Henry, who was in the garage. Within seconds, our son was hit by our car, I was driving.”
He continued, “Our neighbors quickly came in and took Lily, and we rushed to the emergency room.”
Fortunately, Kelly confirmed that X-rays and CT scans showed no signs of damage to Henry's “limbs or spine”, his legs, chest and neck were all “normal” as well.
“Neurological tests have been confirmatory with no signs of head injury or paralysis,” he said. “He has cuts on his thigh that will take time to heal, and a few bruises.” What stays with me is that the doctor says: 'He's injured, but this is something he can recover from.' A real miracle.”
He added, “We're shocked. We're very sad. But we're incredibly grateful. … I know this has changed us.”
Kelly encouraged her followers to “hold or hold hands with small children near cars” and “don't assume they know or will stay where you last saw them.”
The parenting advocate shared photos of Henry recovering in his hospital bed and a shot of him holding his son's heavily bandaged arm.
Kelly felt outraged at how the situation could have turned out differently if “the morning looked different.”

Why didn't I double check before leaving,” she asked. “We can drive ourselves crazy with what ifs, and to be honest, we are few. But accidents happen.”
Kelly concluded, “I keep coming back to what I would tell my kids one day if it happened to them. It would be so much better than what we're telling ourselves right now. Accidents happen, and the only mistakes are the ones we don't learn from. We're on the lucky side of the worst accident.”
The family received an outpouring of support from their fans, with one person saying, “Thank you for sharing this. Accidents happen and you deserve compassion and I hope that's all you get. If you don't send love your way.”
“Sending you so much love!!! How horrible! I'm sorry for what happened,” replied another fan, writing for the third time, “My heart goes out to your mother so happy Henry will make a full recovery.”
The facilitator Emilie Kiser — who lost her young son Trigg in a drowning accident in May 2025 — consoled the Hopton-Joneses by sharing that she was “so sorry.”
