Talk show host Jon Stewart asked New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani where he disagrees with other Democratic Socialists who are rebelling against the Democratic Party during Wednesday's episode of his podcast, “The Weekly Show.”
Stewart, a long-time member of the Democratic Party, noted on his show that times have changed, that “now Democratic Socialism is considered the hottest trend in the Democratic Party and there's low power and everything — and these Democratic Socialist candidates are coming out, and you're going to have to answer for all of their policy positions.”
“Look, I'm probably an old man or a s— lib or whatever they want to call me,” Stewart said. “If someone says we're going to get rid of all prisons and borders, like I'm going, I don't think that's a good idea. Like, it sounds like order and safety is a constant value. Why shouldn't people living in low-resource areas have the same safety and security as neighbors with more resources?”

Then he asked Mamdani, “Now, are there any teachings of these that follow after the success of Zohran Mamdani that you are not happy about or stop you a little?”
Mamdani replied, “If you have more than one Socialist in the room and there is no disagreement, you don't have more than one person in the room.”
Mamdani went on to say that he is comfortable with such discussions, as long as they are successful.
“Well, I'm comfortable with disagreeing, and I'm comfortable with disagreements that don't completely end the conversation, because I think what motivates a lot of people is, 'How do you deliver public safety?' Mamdani said. “And something I say over and over is, 'We can't have New Yorkers choosing between safety and justice.'

“Yes, I know, I work with our police department, and we have been able to bring down the lowest number of murders and shootings in recorded history,” said Mamdani. “And at the same time, I'm working to close Riker's Island and make sure we build four small village-based prisons that end a terrible chapter in the history of New York City.”
Mamdani went on to agree that a person's safety should not depend on the quality of their neighborhood.
“I think you know, if we think about security, there will be no security framework where you meet more or less depending on where you live in our city, or how much money you have in your pocket,” said Mamdani. “And there won't be a definition of security that follows the truth, which means how you respond to violence. We also have to do the work of investing to prevent violence.”
