“I think, honestly, it was harder for my wife, who was at home with the kids and started hearing things through text messages and social media, than it was for me,” JD, 41, told Fox News on Monday, April 29. “I didn't really know what was going on.”
The vice president was escorted out of the Washington Hilton ballroom seconds before Secret Service agents found the President. Donald Trump outside the room when shots rang out on Saturday, April 25. (Trump, 79, later explained 60 Minutes that he “wanted to see what was going on” before leaving the ballroom with his wife, the first wife. Melania Trump.)
Describing the horrific events, JD told Fox News, “I'm sitting up there in the square with some reporters and apparently the President of the United States is a few seats to my right. There's a lot of commotion. You hear loud noises. I didn't know what it was.”
“Before I had any idea what was going on, I started seeing people ducking under their tables or responding to what was happening far back in the ballroom,” he continued. “An agent comes and whispers in my ear, basically saying, 'Sir, we have to go.' … The agent lifted me up and I went down the stage to my last room and waited to see what was going on.”
JD admitted that he “didn't panic” until he heard that the Secret Service agent had been shot. (The bullet hit the agent's protective vest and he was hospitalized for treatment.)
“In the fog of war, I actually thought, 'This person is seriously injured or maybe worse,'” the politician recalled. “Later we found out he wasn't seriously injured. As you read this information, something I've come to appreciate is the incredible work done by Secret Service agents.”
A native of California Cole Thomas Allen was caught during the shooting and charged with attempted assassination of the President of the United States, transporting a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, according to the Department of Justice. He hasn't applied yet.

“We are thrilled to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” the Vances announced on January 20. “Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
Their statement concluded, “During this exciting and busy time, we are so grateful for the military doctors who take such good care of our family and the staff who do so much to make sure we can serve the country while enjoying a happy life with our children.”
In March, Usha opened up to NBC News about her decision with JD to have a fourth child.
“I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great value. And I had two children, and I thought – I felt incomplete, didn't I? So I really wanted to have a third child,” she explained. “We felt so complete with the third child, in so many ways. We had our daughter, who was amazing, and she was so beautiful. So I wasn't sure. But as time went on, I realized that I was feeling more and more excited about what was possible.”
Usha added, “So if there was an opportunity, I had to take it. I knew I'd be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew I'd be happy if we had four. So here we are.”
The Vances have been married since 2014.
