Härtig was involved in a fatal accident while hiking in the Dolomite mountains in northern Italy on June 23 when his bicycle collided with a motorcycle driven by climber Runggaldier, 57, according to local media. A mirror reports that Härtig was taken to a hospital in Bolzano by helicopter but his family later moved him to Bavaria, where he died on Sunday, July 12.
