A high school biology teacher in Georgia has been arrested after being accused of sexually assaulting a student on two occasions, and the incident that happened is alleged to have happened in a classroom.
Maris Nichols has been charged with two counts of sexual assault by a person in charge or having disciplinary authority, according to KGNS.
Nichols, 25, appeared in court on Friday, May 8, and a judge set his bond at $40,000, according to WSB-TV.
The alleged assault occurred while Nichols was teaching at Alexander High School in Douglasville.
Nichols is accused of sleeping with a student on two separate occasions, according to 11Alive. The first alleged incident occurred on April 23 in the middle of a high school, and the second incident occurred in a Hummer on a public access road on May 2.
After the school learned of the allegations, Nichols was taken into custody and officials notified parents of the situation.
“The Douglas County School System is very concerned about the allegations against an individual associated with one of our schools,” the district said in a statement, per 11Alive. “After learning of the allegations of misconduct, the district immediately began an investigation.”
The district added that “student safety is the district's top priority.”
“This alleged behavior is unacceptable and violates the standards that all employees must uphold,” the district added, noting that it is cooperating with authorities during the investigation.
The newspaper also reported that law enforcement officers were present at the school on the afternoon of May 6 to investigate the allegations.
“The Douglas County School System will continue to fully cooperate with state and local law enforcement. The district is unable to provide additional information regarding the allegations,” the statement concluded. “Further questions should be directed to the County Sheriff's Office.”

Although the district has not disclosed whether Nichols was let go from his teaching position, Us Weekly can confirm that he is no longer named or pictured as a teacher on the high school website.
Nichols was booked into the Douglas County Jail and appears to be out of custody.
It is not yet known if Nichols has filed a plea or retained an attorney after his arrest. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond Us' a request for comment on the case.
The police also did not reveal how the school saw the situation. The investigation of this case is still ongoing.
