Forgotten '90s Sci-Fi Classic Begs for a Reboot

As a genre nerd, I have mixed feelings about reboot television. Specifically, I think it's a waste of time to try to reboot something really good because a new show might big disappointment compared to before. In fact, that's why I was happy Buffy the Vampire Slayer restart canceled; that depressing sixth season though, the premiere was almost completeand trying to improve on that can definitely be disappointing. Instead, it's better to reboot a disappointing show that was strong, like Ronald D. Moore did Battlestar Galactica.

With that in mind, there's never been a genre show that needs a reboot more Slides. The game made perfect sense, and explored how interesting multiverses could be before Marvel took the idea further. But after a few seasons of good storytelling, Slides we were turned into a schlock action show that ripped off almost everything and started bleeding members until the series was almost unwatchable. The result is a decent show that should be a big show, and rebooting may be the only option Slides to achieve its full potential.

Plays Slide-And-Seek

The layout of Slides that Quinn Mallory (Jerry O'Connell) develops technology to “slide” into different parallel realities, and takes three friends (including a professor played by John Rhys-Davies) on a tour of a whole new world. Unfortunately, the device they use for scrolling soon loses the ability to track home-sized links. Now, they are forced to travel to random countries, hoping to eventually return to their original state. But there is a timer: they must travel to a new dimension when the countdown timer runs down to zero. Otherwise, they will stick to another reality decades!

It's a great idea, and the series is basically a love child The Twilight Zone again The Quantum Leap. As in The Twilight ZoneDifferent dimensions are used to explore one ideal scenario after another, including worlds where America lost the Revolutionary War and worlds where time goes back. But a lot The Quantum LeapOur heroes usually spend their time in each reality trying to improve as many lives as possible. The result is an incredibly emotional show where our characters navigate serious moral dilemmas while wearing their hearts firmly on their sleeves.

Actors Fired for Bad Writing

Slides there were two seasons of almost complete storytelling, and if it had been canceled after that, fans of the genre would have talked about it with the same respect that we do. Firefly. Unfortunately, the show continued for two more seasons, and it started to go away seriously on the way down in season 3. That's because the Fox network wanted the show to move from mind-blowing sci-fi to action schlock. Rhys-Davies has been tight-lipped about what went wrong with Season 3. During an interview at the Toulouse Game Show, he discussed how the writers started breaking other people's ideas. “We did an episode like this Tremblingone likes The Twisterone likes Night of the Living Deadand I mean one like The Island of Doctor Moreauusing real masks from the movie!” Continuing, he said, “What hurt me the most is that when I entered I saw the writers sitting watching the DVD of Speciesthat was just released, and it says: 'Look, we can take a little bit of that scene there and a little bit of that scene.'

Do Anything Slider-Man Can Do

Easy enough, the Raiders of the Lost Ark the actor summed up why well Slides it needs to restart. A new series that doesn't try to make blatant ripoffs of other movies and shows can take its time to explore all the practical, moral, and ethical issues involved in going through the various stages. This will reduce the risk of core actors leaving the game; like, at the end of the first series, only one member of the original cast (Cleavant Derricks) was still around! But a Slides with consistent acting and a perfect premise for an episodic adventure? That would be a perfect resume unstoppable.

However, the reboot of this show seems to be less than before. Earlier, Jerry O'Connell and John Rhys-Davies discussed a possible reboot Slides creator Tracy Tormé, who has been working on renewing the franchise as recently as 2021. Sadly, he died in 2024, which means we may have to slide into a new place to see what the reboot looks like. Luckily, fans can still hear the premiere in its entirety with the click of a button.
