Duck Dynasty star Alan “Al” Robertson he looks back that he and his wife Lisa Robertson he overcame the problems of their marriage following his affair.
“When infidelity happens in a marriage, a lot of times, that's the end of it, but it doesn't have to be,” said Al, 61, in an interview with Fox News Digital published on Friday, May 15. “Everything can be fixed.”
Al, the eldest son of Phil again Kay Robertsonhe shared that he was “willing to fight” for his marriage to Lisa because he “made a lot of mistakes” of his own.
“When I first met Lisa, she was actually a good girl, who had faced difficult things in her life up to that point, but she really wanted what she called a 'champion of light weapons,' someone to hold her hand and lead her out of other things,” he recalled. “And I just wasn't that guy in the early years.”
The couple were high school sweethearts and dated on and off before tying the knot in 1984. Al and Lisa went on to welcome daughters Anna and Alex. While Lisa was raising their children, Al became a pastor at the church his family had attended for many years. Eventually he found himself busy and traveling for work, which left Lisa lonely.
“To be honest with you, I made a big mistake by not involving Lisa as a partner in what we were doing, in my work and in my dreams,” he told the press. “[She] he was dealing with all these internal things since he was young. I didn't see. I didn't see it.”
Lisa ended up reconnecting with her ex-boyfriend – and Al found out.
“I think in the first few weeks, I was inclined to think it was almost over,” he reflected. “I wasn't sure if I would fully trust him again. [I wasn’t] sure Lisa really wanted to be at our wedding. Do you really know if your spouse wants to stay? Do they want more than you can offer?”
During that difficult part of her marriage to Al, Lisa had an epiphany while praying in her backyard.
“I gave my life to the Lord, in the back yard, when I finally called God, He came to meet me right there in the back yard,” he told the outlet on Friday. “From that day forward, I think I knew I couldn't make it because I had never called Him before, I had never asked for His help and asked Him to save me. [But] He came and saved me. I think that was the most important thing I did.”
In addition to finding strength in her faith, Lisa sought counseling. As Lisa made an effort to change, Al forgave her.
“What changed my mind and heart about Lisa was her,” he said. “It was clear to me by talking to the friends he had that he wanted this marriage to stay together, he was very sorry for what had happened, and he had finally come to an end in his life.
Lisa and Al renewed their vows in 1999 and have been going strong ever since.
