Colbert's final episode aired on Thursday, May 21, nearly a year after CBS announced in July 2025 that the show would be axed.

The move caused backlash from viewers at the time due to its popularity and the perception that the decision may have been due to Colbert's political commentary.

Network executives then issued a statement defending their request to pull the plug on the program. The statement stressed that the decision was “not related in any way to the game's performance, content or other matters taking place at Paramount” and said it was due to financial reasons.

Critics raised eyebrows at the show's cancellation, which came after an episode in which Colbert talked about Paramount, the parent company of CBS, handling what he called a “nuisance lawsuit” brought by Trump.
