Caitlin Clark was slapped in the face by a WNBA legend after receiving an insult that could have cost her a victory.

Caitlin Clark hit the ball, got a technical foul that could have resulted in a major penalty, and came away with the win and first place in the Eastern Conference on Saturday.

Early in the first quarter of the Fever's 108-88 win over the New York Liberty, Clark was called for a technical foul after running at full speed on a tight screen set by Jonquel Jones.

The play was not whistled as illegal by the officials, but Clark hit the ground and expressed his frustration to a nearby referee. The technical was checked just 90 seconds into the game, marking Clark's sixth of the 2026 season.

Fever head coach Stephanie White said she didn't ask for an explanation from the administration about calling Clark or not being called on the screen play.

“There needs to be discussions… making sure we have strategies to exploit our technical mistakes,” said White.

The $1,000 fine that comes with the technology puts the duo away from an automatic one-game suspension under WNBA rules.

Later in the game, during a defensive contest near the basket, New York's Breanna Stewart extended her arm while challenging for a shot. Replays showed Stewart's hand making good contact with Clark's side. No fouls were called in the game, and Stewart was not evaluated as a standout or reviewed.
