Russell Brand Felt 'Not Enough' When He Married Katy Perry

Russell Brand opens up about her brief marriage to the pop star Katy Perry.
“I didn't handle that marriage well,” the comedian, 50, said Wednesday, April 22, on SiriusXM's. The Megyn Kelly Show.
Brand and Perry, 41, tied the knot in October 2010, however, she filed for divorce just over a year later in December 2011. Their divorce was finalized in July 2012.
In his Wednesday interview with a political commentator Megyn KellyBrand said that she entered the marriage feeling unfulfilled in her life and thought that marrying Perry would help her self-esteem.
“When you fall in love with someone, like, isn't it amazing to fall in love? Imagine that combined with everyone acting like it's important,” she explained. “And, he's really good … You know what about him? He's innocent. He's a great person. And he drives incredibly hard and works really hard. I saw him work really hard.”
Brand continued, “Here I am taking responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage. I felt like I wasn't enough and I wasn't enough on my own, so I realized [her as] this great, glorious thing, though I knew it as a person, just an ordinary person. Who's popular when it comes time to take a shower, pick your nose, scratch your butt? Everyone lives with life and flesh. “

“But he was really, really, really lovely,” she said. “It was my fault, I was forced to marry early because I felt inadequate and insecure and that I was not good enough and that if I married him, I would somehow be a better and more important person.”
According to Brand, he now realizes that what he expected from marriage is putting the singer under “unnecessary pressure and stress.”
Perry was “a very young woman” at the time, she said, adding, “She couldn't fulfill those obligations.”
“When he did that, I was like, 'Wait a minute, I'm lonely and this isn't working,'” Brand said.
At the time, the comedian said he was thinking, “She's married to a pop star, come on,” but went on to question why the relationship didn't work out.
Brand said the marriage didn't work out for the best because he was “set to marry my wonderful wife,” referring to his partner, Laura Gallacherwhom he married in 2017.
Brand told Kelly that “it's true” he hasn't spoken to Perry since he said he wants a divorce but he's still in touch with his parents.
“I keep in touch with his father, Keithand his mother, Marybecause they are good Christian people,” he said, adding that he “sympathizes a lot” with Perry Ruby Rose' recent allegations of sexual harassment against him. (Perry denied Rose's claims.)
