Cave of Thieves centers on the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, “The Controllers,” who set out to track down a group of ex-military bank robbers, calling themselves “The Outlaws,” who are some of the most ambitious criminals in the city's history. The Regulators are led by the alcoholic Nick O'Brien (Butler), while the Outlaws are led by Ray Merrimen (Schreiber). With two factions on a collision course, the film follows a similar strategy game, as each side tries to outthink the other while raising the stakes with every move.
Cave of Thieves received mixed reviews from critics at the time, but those in the know understand what makes the film tick. The dedication to slow burn and procedural detail relies more on cat-and-mouse logic than non-stop action, which allows the movie to shine. Butler and Schreiber are great as the fearsome leads of both teams, injecting a strong, focused energy into their performances. As Henry gets deeper and deeper into the organization, Goodfellas traces his involvement in a deadly crime spree with his partner Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), all the while the once seemingly beautiful lifestyle begins to unravel, as Henry's control begins to slip away from him.
Directed by Martin Scorsese and driven by a breakout performance from Liotta, in addition to controlling the presence of De Niro and Pesci, Goodfellas it's a classic crime scene. It blooms with raw energy, meticulous detail and effective voice-over narration, drawing you right into the inner machinations of Henry's vision. Although it appears to glorify Henry's – and illegal – lifestyle, the film is as much about the lure of a life of crime and easy money as it is about the fall. Scorsese skillfully shows how quickly ambition and loyalty crumble under the weight of excess.
Set in a dystopian future where crime can be predicted and prevented before it happens, Little Report follows “crime” boss John Anderton (Tom Cruise), the head of a special crime unit that arrests suspects based on the idea of an impending murder from three powerful witches. However, when the system unexpectedly points to John himself as a future human killer (Mike Binder) never met, John is forced to flee to clear his name, as he begins to question both his destiny and the technology he once trusted so completely.
Cruise gives one of the best performances of his career in this sci-fi thriller from the blockbuster maestro Steven Spielberg. Little Report combines noir-infused paranoia with high-concept science fiction in a story adapted from the 1956 novella of the same name by Philip K. Dickcreating a world that feels subtle and deeply mysterious. The film is memorable for its mix of action thrillers and philosophical themes, preoccupied with whether preventing crime justifies sacrificing free will. Visual design, tightly coupled and supported by a compelling “man-on-the-run” story, Little Report It remains one of the most thought-provoking blockbuster sci-fi of the early-2000s.
