Tom Cruise debuts shocking new look in 'Digger' trailer

Tom Cruise is taking on one of the most dramatic transformations of his career.

On Monday, Warner Bros released the first trailer for Alejandro Iñárritu's highly anticipated film, “Digger”, giving fans a glimpse of the 64-year-old actor in a role unlike anything he's done in years.

Cruise portrays Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil executive whose decisions put the world on the brink of disaster, ultimately forcing him to embark on a mission to save humanity.

According to the film's official synopsis, Cruise's character embarks on a mission to prove that he is “a hero to humanity before the tragedy he unleashes destroys everything.”

The trailer opens with Digger preoccupied with his sick cat before blasting an employee who suggests shutting down one of the company's biggest projects. It soon becomes clear that this venture could lead to an incredible $18 billion disaster, setting the stage for the film's most important story.

Cruise is almost invisible in the pictures, playing a very different role as the unlikely millionaire.

Fans on social media could not ignore the jaw-dropping change.

“Respect for the glorious king,” one user wrote on X. “DIGGER is already funny.”

“You can't beat the way you look,” one user wrote. “Les Grossman vibe, I bet he had a lot of energy making this movie, he's so amazing!”

“Digger” marks Cruise's first acting role outside of the blockbuster “Top Gun” and the “Mission: Impossible” franchise in years. The film is directed by Oscar winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (“Birdman,” “The Revenant”) and will hit theaters on Oct. 2.

Cruise first unveiled the trailer during a Q&A event in Los Angeles last week, where he praised the ambitious project and creative partnership with Iñárritu.

“I've never had anything challenge me like Alejandro when we entered,” said Cruise, in People. “And when you see this movie, it's real.”

The ensemble cast also includes Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Emma D'Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman.

Ahead of the trailer's release, Cruise also increased his social media presence by joining TikTok over the weekend to promote the film.

The actor quickly gathered more than 1.4 million followers.
