Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., argued in an interview published Sunday that Democrats need to ditch the jargon and connect with young men who have fled their party in recent years.

As 2028 approaches, Democrats are still trying to understand why so many voters, especially young people of many races, voted for President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

“Pod Save America” host and former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau noted in an interview that, “One of the surprising things about the Trump era is that, in terms of election results, racism has gone down over the last decade largely because a small but insignificant portion of black men, especially young black men, have stopped voting for Democrats.”

He also noted that some voted directly for Trump, such that his support among black voters doubled between 2020 and 2024, and that, therefore, “Obviously, some of these young men feel something in Trump and the right they feel in us.”

“That's a good question,” said Warnock, however he cautioned that the issue could not be handled in a way that harms others.

“We have to resist the false divide between standing up for women and standing up and being a clear voice against corruption and sexism, which I've talked about extensively for the past few Sundays in my pulpit, and at the same time I see ways that men and young men, especially, young, Black men in different ways than Latino men, are hurting and someone has to talk about that,” she said.

“Many problems,” continued the priest. “I think most of our young people feel depressed.”

He recalled his growth from being one of 12 children, growing up in jobs, and growing up to become a pastor and a United States Senator. However, he argued that, if anything, it would be harder for such a meteoric rise to happen now than it was in the 1980s when he was growing up.

After repeating his speech that one should be able to deal with discrimination against women while trying to open up opportunities for young men, he suggested that the other part of the issue is just communication.

“I think sometimes we get caught up in our jargon on the left, and people sometimes don't know what they're talking about,” he warned. “I think speaking plain English — because many times, our policies can help a lot. Right? But you have to speak plain English to people.”
