Leeds are now looking to sign the “good” player who is set to leave Newcastle this summer

Leeds United are now looking to poach the 'fantastic' player who is set to leave Newcastle this summer, according to a report.

Leeds have just had a good win at Man United

Leeds arrived at Old Trafford on Monday night needing a result to put some daylight between themselves and the relegation zone, and leave with something very historic.

Noah Okafor scored twice in the first half hour to give Daniel Farke's side a 2-1 win, their first league win at the ground since 1981.

Lisandro Martínez's red card for a hair-pull on Dominic Calvert-Lewin, upheld via VAR in the 56th minute, gave the result more controversy, and Casemiro's header reduced the deficit, but Leeds held on for a result that effectively ended any serious threat of relegation.

The victory opened a six-point gap between Leeds and the bottom three, with Opta reducing their chances of relegation to less than two per cent following the final whistle.

Farke's side also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, giving a campaign that began with serious doubts about their ability to survive in the top flight a truly impressive finish.

He would be a great addition.

With six games to go – including games against Wolves and already relegated Burnley – the foundations for next season have already been laid.

One area Leeds want to address is defence, with Pascal Struijk among their rivals.

Leeds are eyeing Matt Target and the defender to leave Newcastle in the summer

Now, according to TEAMtalk transfer reporter Graeme Bailey, the club have identified Matt Targett as a summer target.

Bailey reports that the 30-year-old is attracting increasing interest from a number of Premier League clubs as he prepares to leave Newcastle when his contract expires at the end of the season, with Leeds and Everton both firmly in the picture.

Targett had an impressive campaign at Middlesbrough, where he joined on a season-long loan in August.

The 'fantastic' left-back has made 36 Championship starts this season – the most in any single season of his career – and has been one of Boro's most consistent players as they push for promotion.

He has played at centre-back at times, the flexibility TEAMtalk notes has increased his appeal, and means he can fill in for or fill in for Struijk at the back.

His Newcastle career came to a natural end after hamstring and heel injuries saw him sidelined between 2023/24 and 2024/25, with Dan Burn and Lewis Hall ahead of him on the way.

Earlier this month, Targett confirmed that he had spoken to Howe in January and that the two sides had reached an agreement over his future, with the defender saying his focus on Boro proved he could complete a full season without relegation.

Leeds' interest makes sense on many levels.

Gabriel Gudmundsson has been the first choice at left back this season, but cover is needed, and with Struijk being versatile in all defenses he should also be protected, a player who can operate across the back line offers real value.

The fact that Target will come on a free transfer, with Championship pedigree and Premier League experience, makes the proposal financially straightforward.
