Newly released diary entries reveal that as COVID-19 deaths increase worldwide, former White House COVID advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci focused on his new celebrity.
Released by the Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Rand Paul, the papers recount Fauci's daily role during the COVID-19 crisis through interviews with President Donald Trump, governors and world leaders, media appearances and his firsthand observations as the pandemic unfolds.
Paul, a longtime critic of Fauci who has frequently clashed with Fauci over the agency's response and origins of the virus, made the diary public as part of the committee's ongoing oversight investigation. The release comes days before Fauci is scheduled to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee after being subpoenaed by Paul.

A surprising theme that runs throughout the diaries is Fauci's awareness of his public profile during the most intense months of the pandemic, which eventually killed more than 7 million people worldwide, including nearly 1.2 million in the United States.
On April 7, 2020, after recording the latest epidemic, Fauci wrote: “Press is still hot and heavy with me. Many stories a day that involve me directly or indirectly.”

On May 21, after recording the latest statistics of the epidemic – about 98,000 people who have died worldwide and more than 27,000 deaths in the United States – and documenting the meetings of the White House coronavirus team for the day, Fauci wrote that “his national and international fame is explosive and truly unimaginable” and that “it was not hyperbole” to say that he is the most famous person in the country.
She added that Trump “seems to like me even though I'm looking away from him,” writing that the two formed a “unique and interesting relationship.” Fauci also noted that Secret Service agents who were familiar with him used to pass him through White House security without checking his identity.
As attention continued to grow, the diary continued to document how Fauci's prominence grew beyond public health. A month later, as the United States recorded what Fauci described as a record 40,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day, he wrote that he had been invited to appear on “Dancing with the Stars.”

The diary also documents Fauci's growing frustration with the Trump White House. On July 2, 2020, after warning that the country could experience a “massive spike” in COVID-19 cases heading into the Fourth of July weekend, Fauci wrote that “POTUS and his people are off duty and don't even realize the outbreak is going on.”
He also complained that the White House is turning down requests for him to appear on major television shows. Throughout several interventions, Fauci has criticized White House communications officials for limiting his television appearances, questioned the administration's public messaging and expressed frustration that media coverage is portraying him as someone who disagrees with Trump.

Fauci has also repeatedly defended himself against what he described as “countless” profiles written about him. He wrote that White House officials are upset because what is being talked about makes it seem like he is becoming a “shining star” for the president.
He also insisted that several profiles were written without consulting him and wrote that he had “no desire to conflict, embarrass or show off POTUS,” and later decided to stop participating in profile discussions altogether.
