Comedian Dave Chappelle said Friday he understands why President Donald Trump is “angry” at CNN during a live interview with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, as the network counts down to America's 250th birthday in New York City's Times Square.

During the segment, Cohen asked Chappelle why he is proud to be an American and how he views the country.

“Boy, that's a tough question,” Chappelle said. “Now I see why Trump is mad at you all the time. Why would you ask me that?”

Chappelle then answered this question by saying that his pride in America comes from the people who live in this country, not from every decision made by the government.

“I don't agree with everything our government does, but one thing I've always believed in is that I love being an American and my people,” Chappelle said.

Chappelle said he felt connected to Americans when he met them abroad.

“When I'm overseas or around the world, whenever I see an American over there, we just give each other 'Fight Club' because we live in a crazy world that we only understand what it's about,” he said.

The comedian also said that he still has hope for the country even though it is divided politically.

“And I trust my people, no matter how crazy this is all going to make me feel like the sun is going to come out and I feel like I'm part of an incredible community,” Chappelle said. “So God bless our people and let's make this country more beautiful.”

HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES WAKE UP AMERICA'S 250TH BIRTHDAY WITH SAD HOLIDAY WARNING ABOUT TRUMP

Chappelle closed the exchange with a direct message to Trump about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, after Cohen and Cooper toasted him.

“Hey, can you get me a beer?” Chappelle said. “And Mr. Trump, please leave those Haitians in Springfield alone. We love them. We love the Haitians.”

Springfield became a hotbed of national politics during the 2024 campaign after Trump and others ramped up claims about Haitian immigrants there.

Chappelle also talked about his “summer camp” show in Yellow Springs, which he said began in 2020 after COVID-19 closed entertainment venues and after the killing of George Floyd.

“What, my neighbor's cornfield wasn't working,” Chappelle said. “Every major producer in the state of Ohio was out of a job. So we all got together and just started casting shows.”

He said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine allowed the shows to go on, and the comedian praised the series for being a local tradition.

“We could have shut down any minute, but shout out to the governor, DeWine,” Chappelle said. “You gave us the opportunity to do these shows.”
