Alan Smith impressed with 'unstoppable' star who was 'Tottenham's best player' vs Brighton

Alan Smith was left stunned by Tottenham Hotspur's “unstoppable” player on Saturday, who enjoyed one of his best performances for the club despite Brighton & Hove Albion's late equaliser.

Rutter strikes late on as Tottenham's woes continue

Tottenham remain in the relegation zone in the Premier League after Brighton substitute Georginio Rutter impressed in a 2-2 draw in Roberto De Zerbi's first home game.

Spurs looked set to end their 15-game unbeaten run in the top flight when Xavi Simons struck in the 77th minute to spark wild celebrations at N17.

Xavi's fine effort followed his assist for Pedro Porro's goal after 39 minutes, which was canceled out by Kaoru Mitoma in the first half.

However, scenes of joy turned to disbelief when Kevin Danso lost possession in the fifth minute of added time and Rutter curled home to ensure the spoils were shared.

It denied De Zerbi's team the first victory in charge and the means Tottenham will stay in the bottom three for another week with just five games to go to avoid relegation for the first time since 1977.

Roberto De Zerbi reveals the 'problem' with the board that could see him leave Tottenham

The Spurs boss says relegation is “not a problem”.

Reacting to one of his former team's disappointments, Michael Dawson told Sky Sports: “They should take a good point, but it will feel like a loss – when you lead at home twice, even where Spurs are without 15 wins, I thought when they went 2-1 up, 'this is an opportunity to turn your fortunes around and climb to the top of the Ham three.

“And Danso's one mistake, you switch off in the last minute of the game, you're in the middle, you clear your lines, you do everything to make sure we get out of here with a win in this football game. And this will feel like two big points dropped.”

Alan Smith was blown away by the “unstoppable” Simons.

As for Simons, there wasn't much he could do. The Dutchman, according to Smith in the comments, was “Tottenham's best player” on the day and looked more frustrated than anyone at full-time.

After seeing what many believed would be Simons' game-winning goal, the commentator didn't hold back, saying: “A worldie has just been delivered! That one is unstoppable. The King of Simons.”

Having already assisted Porro's opening effort, Simons thought he saved his best moment in the second half, curling a stunning effort on goal.

Although Brighton's late equalizer grabbed the headlines, Simons was delighted with the type of performance the North Londoners have been waiting for since arriving last summer.

With Tottenham trying to climb out of the bottom three with five games to play, the former RB Leipzig man will undoubtedly play a key role.
