NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers

Montreal Canadiens Sam Montembeault on his future

Marco D'Amico: Montreal Canadiens goalkeeper Sam Montembeault when asked about his future with the team: “I have one year left on my contract, I don't make those decisions. All I can do is have a good summer.”

Another potential target is if the New York Rangers are looking to make a big swing

Vincent Z. Mercogliano of the Athletic: It sounds like New York Rangers GM Chris Drury would like to work this offseason, but that may be easier said than done. They may be willing to take a big swing at someone, but who is available that they would consider?

The Rangers could look to move Vincent Trocheck, but that could be for a package deal.

NHL Rumors: Nashville Predators and Chris MacFarland Heating Up

Looking at the top six and top four, here are some options.

UFAs – Alex Tuch fits a need at the position, and brings size and scoring, but does it really make sense to spend that kind of money on a 30-year-old who is a consistent player. I don't see Rangers wanting to spend big on right back Darren Raddysh.

The Buffalo Sabers may need the cap room to re-sign Tuch, along with RFA players Zach Benson and Peyton Krebs. They are full of left defenders. Would they move Bowen Byram (DIES after next season) or Owen Power (five years remaining at $8.35 million)?

The Dallas Stars may re-sign RFA Jason Robertson, but they may have to do something to fit his money. Some people are curious about Roope Hintz, who has five years left at $8.45 million. You have a no-movement clause. Mavrik Bourque is an RFA with arb rights.

The San Jose Sharks may be willing to move their No. 2 pick, and may even consider moving back a bit to select a defenseman. The Rangers own the No. 5 pick and could use a forward. The Sharks have young forwards and could use a young back. They would be interested in Braden Schneider and William Eklund would be good, but they have prospects like Filip Bystedt, Igor Chernyshov, Quentin Musty.

St. Louis Blues have Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou, both at $8.125 million through 2031. The Rangers shouldn't give up the No. 1 pick. 5, and has nothing else to interest the Blues.

Auston Matthews will be a long game. The Rangers are among the teams interested in seeing if Toronto Maple Leafs Matthew Knies is available. He's only 23 years old, put up 66 points last season and has $7.75 million for five more years.

NHL and NHLPA Announce 2027 All-Star Game Celebrations

The Rangers should look to Vegas Golden Knights RFA forward Pavel Dorofeyev. If they wanted to give him a sheet, they would need to get their 2027 round back from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Golden Knights may move Tomas Hertl and Adin Hill to make up for the needed cap space. Perhaps the Rangers could use their cap space to acquire Hertl, William Karlsson, Nic Dowd or Keegan Kolesar.

If the Ottawa Senators ever make Brady Tkachuk available, the Rangers could be interested.
