The 76ers jumped into betting as the favorite out of the East after LeBron James took his talents to Philadelphia

Love him or hate him, LeBron James is still a needle maker. At least in the sports books and prediction markets.

After signing LeBron to a team-friendly two-year, $8 million deal, the Philadelphia 76ers are now the betting favorites in the Eastern Conference to win the 2027 championship in Kalshi.

I know the percentages can be confusing, so for the American, the Sixers are +684 to win the title next season. They beat the reigning NBA champion New York Knicks, who are the second betting favorite (+1240) out of the East starting at 2 pm ET on Friday, July 24.

This is the second major move Philly has made this offseason, coming on the heels of trading Paul George to the Boston Celtics for 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown.

Now, Philadelphia's starting five includes LeBron, Brown, 2022-23 NBA MVP Joel Embiid, two-time All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, and SG VJ Edgecombe, who finished third in Rookie of the Year voting last season.

Finally, the question: Is this team ready to win the title?

I mean, if the 76ers get lucky enough to get insanely injured in the playoffs, of course they can win the championship. All groups can. And in terms of NBA2K: Sure. If you turn off the damage and control the players yourself.

Whether personality and play styles match is another discussion. In fact, there is a strong possibility that the 2026-27 Philadelphia 76ers will be many cooks in the kitchen type an item.

In theory, the upgrade from PG to Brown, while adding LeBron to the Sixers team that upset the Celtics in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs (which led Boston to spazz and make a franchise-changing trade), is a power move.

Brown is a champion and five-time NBA All-Star who averaged the best in points, rebounds and assists last season. He is at his best athletically and has never suffered a major injury.

And, love him or hate him, LeBron scored last season, his final game with the Los Angeles Lakers. He averaged 20.9 points on 51.5% shooting with 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 games.

But LeBron has always had the ball, and I don't see him changing much at 41, soon to be 42. Brown is a scorer who likes to take defenders off the dribble and works in the mid-range.

Philadelphia needs Embiid healthy and playing at 70% of his MVP-self to justify being the betting favorite in the East. However, Embiid is constantly injured, and he is a worse defender than when he was growing up.

Maxey actually led the 76ers in scoring last season despite Embiid having the highest usage rate on the team. Are we sure he'll be okay with giving the ball to LeBron and the Browns?

Procrastination is not the same as buying a small role but playing your ia– off. It's not guaranteed that two or three All-Stars will cool off as role players, and you need the “glue guys” to win a title.

That said, Philly should be second to New York as the betting favorite to win the East. The Knicks will have the same five players in their title defense, all in their primes. If they meet in the playoffs, Jalen Brunson will be the best player on the floor.
