Ransom Canyon risked a sibling love triangle – and now several actors are breaking their silence in a shocking shakeup.
During season 2 of the Netflix series, which is airing now, Lauren (Lizzy Greene) and Kit (Casey W. Johnson) met when she was dating her younger brother, Lucas (Garrett Wareing).
Wareing, 24, Johnson, 31, and creator April Blair he said to himself Us about the decision to explore such taboo subject matter — and whether they were worried about fans' reactions to the on-screen movement.
“The writers' room season 2 started months before season 1 was released. So we care about what the fans think and the audience but by the time the season aired, we were already in the process of writing season 2,” Blair recalled. “I saw the first cut of the tornado episode and I was like, 'We need to do something with Kit and Lauren. I think there's a lot of chemistry there.'
Blair recalled that the writers' room was “divided” on the issue.
“I was like, 'Messy is good, let's try it.' But I think once the show aired and we saw all the people posting it I was like, 'We're on the right track,'” he continued. “But we're definitely considering it.”

Did the Cast See Kit and Lauren's Romance Coming?
Despite filming scenes between Kit and Lauren in season 1, Johnson didn't realize the show would explore them as a couple.
“I remember straight into the tornado episode and I was like, 'I don't want to feel intimate. This is my little brother's girlfriend so I don't want it to be a thing,'” she told us. “And then we did the scenes and obviously how it came out and how everyone reacted to it … it was just two people who were really vulnerable to each other and it grew and it was more than what connected them. I didn't expect it but it ended up happening.”
Wareing was just happy to go along for the ride.
“The writers listen to you all! And if it's drama you want, then it's drama you'll get! Be careful what you wish for,” he laughed. “Secretly, I love you [the love triangle]. It's dangerous and makes the watch more interesting.”
Why Did Kit And Lauren Kiss Despite Her Relationship With Lucas?
“It's very confusing. They're both very confused at this point. Kit is at a crossroads in her life and she doesn't know what she wants to do,” Johnson commented. Us. “But I think there's an undeniable connection between Kit and Lauren. He feels like he has to explore even if it's not the best thing.”
Johnson revealed how the duo bonded over being “outcasts” in the city.
“Lucas is so perfect. For Lauren, it's hard to live up to that. If you insult, you feel like I'm not worthy of this person. Kit, in the same way, feels like Lucas is this perfect golden image, which he's not,” he continued. “But in their eyes, that's how they see him and they want to protect that and find themselves making mistakes. They're in the same place. Maybe that translates long-term and maybe it doesn't.”
Blair pointed out that Lauren struggled compared to Lucas, saying, “They're just not in the same place emotionally. They need other loves and other lives and other connections. That's what we're doing going forward — but always with this idea that they're the Quinn and Staten of their era.”
Is Kit and Lauren or Lucas and Lauren Endgame?
Johnson, Wareing and Blair all agreed that when it came to the big picture: Lucas and Lauren got their vote.
“As a viewer, I think Kit might say something different. But you never know what's going to happen. In my mind, they're the end game,” Johnson said. Those two must end up together but we will see.
Blair, on the other hand, told Us Lucas and Lauren are “the end game” for him.
“I don't know when that show is or if it's in the life of our series. But it's Quinn and Staten outside of high school,” teased the screenwriter. “When Lucas says goodbye to her and tells her about Kit and says, 'One day we'll be okay.' I think they just need to have other lives and other love and other experiences.”
Then there was Wareing, who argued that it should be Lucas and Lauren – or nothing.
“If Lucas and Lauren don't see the end, I won't believe in love again,” Kithi joked. “To me, they're like the rational kind of love and longing of youth. I'd like to see that fantasy come true for them.”

Wareing argued that there was no other way.
“The love triangle trope was there. How could they not swing! I just hope people know which brother to root for!” he laughed Us.

Will Lucas and Kit get back together?
Johnson has no doubt in his mind that the brothers will agree, telling us, “He'll probably punch me a few times before he forgives me completely. But that's hard to come back from. They've been rocking each other forever.
Wareing gave his opinion on Lucas' decision to support Lauren and Kit.
“Because at the end of the day, she's still the love of his life. And 'If you love something… you have to let it go.' So is Lucas,” he added. “Because you love him so much and you just want to see him happy. Whether with him, or without him.”
Could Lucas Get a Break in Season 3?
According to Blair, he will. Wareing, on the other hand, didn't mind the challenge by exploring other sides of the fan-favorite character.
“Our sweet boy Lucas has been hit after hit! “But when we talk about character arcs, there has to be an ebb and flow – an up and down – and playing that down as a character was really fun for me and something that April, our writers, and I really worked on together.
He continued: “With Lucas and Lauren, they both made a mistake. One of my last lines this season is 'And I have to think about that.' So I think this is Lucas' journey forward, looking at these mistakes.”
Looking ahead, Wareing didn't rule out Lucas' new love interest.
“That's not going to happen! I think this will be another time where the writers will listen to the fans,” he said. “Who does Lucas want to go with next? I think that as Lucas matures, maybe his love will like…”
