The NHL is finalizing an investigation into Mike Babcock's time with the Blue Jackets, and will not suspend him from practice

The NHL says it has concluded its investigation into the conduct of coach Mike Babcock during his brief tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the summer of 2023.

Findings? That there's no reason he can't return to action in the National Hockey League.

This paves the way for Babcock to sign on to lead the Edmonton Oilers.

“The league has concluded its review of Mike Babcock's tenure in Columbus, and the allegations of misconduct related to that,” the league said in a statement released early Thursday afternoon. “Our investigation has concluded that, even in the slightest against Mr. Babcock, there is no current basis to restrict his employment with the Organization.”

The misconduct allegations are related to allegations that Babcock asked members of the Blue Jackets to show him pictures of himself on their phones. No investigation was conducted at the time, because before it began, Babcock resigned from the team.

Now, with the Edmonton Oilers seemingly circling a Stanley Cup-winning coach, it looks like they have the all-clear in the league to put pen to paper.

If that happens… boy, maybe keep an eye on Edmonton because it's going to be interesting.

Is Babcock the guy to get the Oilers over the hump?

It was previously reported that an NHL investigation would not be conducted if Babcock backed out of a deal with the Oilers, and with one recently wrapped up, it makes sense that this is the guy.

Babcock's Cup victory with Detroit in 2008 is a big point for him, but he was unable to win a playoff series while in Toronto. There, he had time to develop other young players such as Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander.

But in Edmonton, they will have to succeed in the first year by winning the cup or coming a lot shut up. That's because the team needs to show captain Connor McDavid that they can win now, otherwise he might skip town.

Bringing in Babcock seems like a Hail Mary for success, but it still doesn't solve the team's depth and scoring problems.

In the beginning, especially, you will face the scrutiny of the media, and that is not something that will be good for the team.

Personally, I think the better option would have been Bruce Cassidy, but we all know now that Vegas blocked them from negotiating with him (which is kind of jungle league, but I also respect the game). They could also seek an off-the-board pick, which is what Toronto and Vegas recently did with Jim Hiller and Ryan Craig, respectively.

No. It looks like they are making a huge turnaround, and only time will tell if it will lead to the Cup or if they will be completely blown away.
