Star Trek Brings Back Its Most Controversial Character After Killing Them Off

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

In Red Letter Media, Mike Stoklassa once presented an interesting idea: that Star Trek: The Original Series it was more of a horror show than anything else. After all, exploring those strange new worlds often came at a price, with Red Shirts being killed left and right by some of the most terrifying monsters in the entire galaxy. Later iterations of the franchise relied on the concept of Trek as horror, including answering every film, First Contactbe i Aliens respect. Now, even with no new Trek series in production right now, the franchise is about to embrace horror like never before.

This week, Bloober Team and Paramount Games Division announced an exciting new video game called Star Trek: The Shadow Frontier. It's a survival horror game where you control a Starfleet officer who crashes on an alien planet and must navigate safely through its terrifying and often deadly environment. That officer is Ro Laren, a rebel Bajoran officer The Next Generation. Ro actress Michelle Forbes once turned down an opportunity to act Deep Space Nine and returned decades later for a brief appearance Picard. But now, more than 30 years after she left TNG, she's ready to take her rightful place as Star Trek's latest leading lady.

Ro, Ro, Ro, Your Boat

What do we know about Star Trek: Shadow Frontier? In an interview with IGN, Bloober Team's Michał Gembicki said that Ro Laren crashes on a world that serves as a “cemetery for ships,” and must “find out what happened there and why there are so many accidents.” The game is designed as a psychological thriller, and a big part of that is related to the biggest secret of this planet: that is, there is some kind of business running it!

According to Bloober and Paramount, this is “a distant planet taken over by a strange consciousness,” and “there [Ro Laren] uncovering him, as he goes deeper he is drawn into a corrupted labyrinth where his memories are turned upside down, and the planet threatens to sever his connection to reality. ” Discovering the treaty of this planet becomes personal to him during the game. “It is only by solving the mysteries of this strange world that Ro can hope to make peace with the demons of his past, boldly entering the heart of darkness like never before.” It is not known when this game takes place, but the presence of the TNG time connector indicates that it may have happened earlier. Star Trek: Generations.

Star Trek Meets The Resident Evil

Right now, Star Trek is getting a steady stream of new video games, including the latest one Star Trek: Voyager–Across the Unknown. Although we have no way of knowing that Star Trek: The Shadow Frontier will be any good (it does not appear until 2027), fans are already excited because Michelle Forbes will be playing her role as Ro Laren, the main character. Ensign Ro was introduced to it The Next Generation in Season 5 as a character with a bad history and a chip on his shoulder; He left in Season 7 after joining the Maquis, the group he was sent to join. He went back inside Picardwhere it is revealed that he has rejoined Starfleet.

One of the reasons old fans like me are excited to see Michelle Forbes return is that she was originally meant to be a lot a major role in the franchise. He helped make the Bajorans famous The Next Generationand the producers of Star Trek wanted to bring Ro Laren to him Deep Space Nine as the main character. However, Forbes didn't want to commit more than half a decade to one job (and the rest of his life at fan conferences), so he turned down the offer. This led Nana Isivakashi to find an actor different A Bajoran with a sketched history and a chip on his shoulder: Major Kira.

In a way, Ro is Back

For decades, most thought we'd never see Forbes on Star Trek again. To everyone's surprise, he entered Picard as a Starfleet Intelligence officer, who tried to warn Picard about the importation of a Changeling into Starfleet before he was killed by the very things he had been investigating. We don't get much information about how he was revived and eventually returned to Starfleet, but that's it Picard episode (“The Impostor”) reveals that he always felt guilty for abandoning Picard and the Enterprise crew. That is very possible Star Trek: The Shadow Frontier will explore that case and perhaps piece together how and why Ro eventually left the Maquis and returned to the Starfleet fold.

Star Trek: The Shadow Frontier will be released sometime in 2027 and will be released on Windows PC and all major consoles. We may get more information about this game in the coming months, but it has already happened: the trailer is hot and windy, and many fans are excited to see this sci-fi franchise take a step towards survival. Most of all, though, we're excited to see the return of Michelle Forbes, one of the biggest characters in the franchise. What happened to Ro Laren in between The Next Generation again Picard? There's only one way to find out, so be sure to tune your controllers and get excited when this game is released next year!
