Mackenzie Shirilla was sentenced to multiple prison terms after being convicted of a “Hell on Wheels” car crash that left her boyfriend and best friend dead.
Shirilla is the subject of a 2026 Netflix documentary The crashwhere she breaks her silence about the July 2022 car accident that killed her boyfriend Dominic Russo and a friend from high school Davion Flanagan in Strongsville, Ohio. (Shirilla drove her Toyota Camry at over 100 mph into a brick wall and was the only survivor despite being seriously injured.)
Although Shirilla has always denied that she intentionally drove her car into the building, she was convicted in 2023 of 12 counts, including murder, and ordered to serve two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life in prison. Since then, Shirilla served time at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio.
Prison records obtained by Us Weekly show that Shirilla has faced numerous disciplinary actions in prison, including a NSFW video call in 2025 in which Shirilla allegedly flashed her breasts to a guest who flashed a “dildo sticking out of her pants twice.”
Shirilla was also booked for possession of altered clothing and four “nude magazine photos” in October 2024. Prison officials gave the Commissioner a 30-day remand as punishment for those offences.
Another breach in December 2024 saw Shirilla serve a 30-day leisure ban after she was caught “dancing” outside the gym instead of exercising.

Mackenzie Shirilla Punished for Possession of 'Unknown Drugs'
In January 2025, prison guards wrote to Shirilla for having “a packet of unknown drugs” and a photo of her “containing drug use.” He was cited for misuse of prescribed medication and “possession of any other illegal substance knowingly altered or without consent for the photograph.”
“Shirilla admitted that she was using drugs and that it wasn't hers. And she had a photo of herself using drugs,” the security guard noted.
Because of this violation of the law, Shirilla was detained for only 30 days.
Mackenzie Shirilla Charged with Concealing Large Amount of Assets for Sale
In September 2024, the prison police accused Shirilla of hiding a large amount of illegal substances. The sales ranged from food – four bags of peanuts, three boxes of jello and marshmallow fluff – to fashion accessories – “dangle earrings made from charms stolen from the kinware room” and “gold and silver wire wrapped around pens” – to unusual items such as “unfilled pink and purple rubber balloons,” two pieces of “mixed” Monopoly money.”
Shirilla denied theft but pleaded guilty to “possession of any other unlawful item, including any article in his possession that has been deliberately altered or unauthorized.”
Mackenzie Shirilla Allegedly Had Video Calls With Unauthorized Guest
Shirilla ran afoul of the rules of the Ohio Reformatory for Women again in April 2025 by having more than “100” video visits with someone “who should not visit Shirilla.” The unauthorized visitor was an “ex-convict who was released.”
In violation of travel rules, Shirilla endured electronics restrictions for one month.

In September 2025, guards at the Ohio Reformatory for Women reportedly found sexual content in some of Shirilla's video calls. The report revealed that “many inappropriate things happened” during one video call, including “Shirilla's show[ing] her breast to the guest.”
“The guest shows his penis and then at 22:53 he shows his chest. Then at 7:42 and 24:01 the guest shows his chest with a lump coming out of his pants twice,” said the report. “Then at 25:17 the guest fixed the phone and entered the frame completely naked. There were 7 video visits between IP Shirilla and this guest.”

Mackenzie Shirilla Argued With Prison Guards About Her Clothes
Shirilla got into trouble in April 2025 when she argued with prison officials about whether she was “dressed properly.” He allegedly told a male security guard that his hoodie would not be checked because his shirt was unbuttoned.
When the security guard asked her to enter the restroom to make sure she was “dressed properly,” Shirilla said and laughed, “If she gets a ticket for the way I'm dressed, it's her fault.”
A female prison worker joined them during the inspection but Shirilla continued to clash with the male guard.
After the release of Netflix's The Crash, an ex-convict said Mackenzie Shirilla was nothing like the remorseful inmate portrayed in a true crime book. “When he came out of the documentary, my jaw dropped, because his behavior and the way he looked were completely different from the person I was. […]
“When we entered the bathroom, Shirilla unzipped her hood and her national shirt was completely removed wearing only a sports bra. She was ordered to button her shirt and give me her changed pants,” wrote a male security guard. “Every time we were in the small room, he was disrespectful and loudly asking if the thing we were worried about was his changed jacket. [She] he has had many reports of illegal goods behavior.”
Shirilla's changed clothes were confiscated and she was given a “new government uniform.”
In this case, Shirilla was punished for disobeying a direct order and disrespecting another person but the violation board overruled what the guard said.
Prison Staff Told Mackenzie Shirilla 'May Reveal Herself' To Them
During an April 2025 meeting with a prison official about her video visit, Shirilla was cited for wearing an illegal hoodie.
“This was at least the third time I spoke to Shirilla wearing a change of clothes and put them in my facility,” the officer wrote in their report, adding later, “I wanted her clothes taken away. [it] as illegal. He went on to say no because he couldn't take it off because his national shirt (which is illegal clothing) was unbuttoned from the top to the bottom and that the bra would be exposed.”

NETFLIXA female prison worker was brought in to confirm that Shirilla was indeed wearing a shirt that was “completely unattached to her exposed bra.”
Along with the trafficking charges, Shirilla was charged with sexual harassment for “intentionally coming to another unit dressed inappropriately.” [and] which may reveal itself to the staff.” The offenders' board ultimately ruled that there was “insufficient evidence of intent” to punish him.

A guard reported in August 2025 that they saw another inmate “remove his hand from IP Shirilla's buttocks” as part of a “consensual sexual encounter.”
He faced a seven-day curfew after being found guilty.
