Why this club is a must have on the golf links

In the last major tournament of the year, the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, players are faced with conditions rarely seen on the PGA Tour: the baked, scorched fairways of summer connect the golf course.
That means the ball runs seemingly forever on some shots – giving players pause about hitting driver off the tee. Some, in fact, choose to hit mid-irons, in an effort to control their ball's accuracy and trajectory.
The premium placed on hitting an accurate, penetrating ball through the air has long made driving irons a popular choice for playing on the links – and the Royal Birkdale is a perfect candidate to put it to good use.
But what is it about driving instruments that makes them so desirable?
“Driving irons are generally stronger players' irons,” says GOLF and equipment content manager Jake Morrow. “Instead of using a game-improvement style iron that can be bulky and bulky, a purpose-built driving iron or iron will have more of a 'player's choice' size and shape that closely matches the set of irons they play, while still providing some technology to increase ball speed and make it easier to play off the tee.”
You may be wondering what makes a fairway wood or hybrid a better driver. Morrow has the right answer for that too.
“Compared to a hybrid or fairway wood, the driving irons will generally be lower and can be easily modified to create different types of ball flights,” he said. “Every year you see guys at the Open swapping them in their bags because the hard conditions support more launches. A 2-iron is usually going to be a more accurate game than hitting a driver or a fairway wood. And if you can get more than 50 yards of launch, a driver or utility style iron can end up where the driver has everything.”
Needless to say, a driving iron can benefit a recreational player's game just as much as a professional. Check out the driving irons available for purchase below, then click the link to customize yours now.

PING iDi Custom Driving Iron
The iDi marks a major step forward in driving iron and long iron performance, giving better golfers the flexibility of three loft options to suit their range number and trajectory window. Loft offers are optimized for launch and throw with 2, 3 & 4 irons with a thin, stiff iron face that flexes to increase ball speed and distance. 2 is a traditional driving iron, delivering low launch and spin. 3 (mid launch, mid spin) is designed as a driving iron or instead of a long iron. The 4 delivers more spin, making it easier to grip the greens and is recommended as a replacement for a long iron. The 17-4 stainless steel head is both deep front to back and shallow, allowing for a 15% higher MOI on high/low impacts, and makes room for the new inR-Air technology. inR-Air is an air pack in the clubhead that dissipates sound and improves feel. A covered cavity and i-Beam structure help reduce vibration. In addition, the iDi is short heel to toe to make it easy to change. For shooting control, each iDi is approximately 1/4″ short and 1° flat.
