United Airlines will offer a free flight change to avoid the airport named by Trump

United Airlines plans to offer passengers free flight changes to avoid arriving at the newly renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport in Florida, according to an internal memo that appears to be directed at customers opposed to the airport's new name.

Passengers protesting arrival at the airport — formerly Palm Beach International Airport — may be transferred to Fort Lauderdale or Miami without paying an additional fee, according to an internal memo obtained by Live And Let's Fly.

“If the customer does not want to fly into the airport, use your power to offer acceptable alternatives such as Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA),” reads the memo to booking agents.

The memo even suggests a response to customers who object to arriving at the rebranded airport.

“I understand you would prefer not to fly into this airport again. We can look at nearby airports like Fort Lauderdale or Miami instead. Is that an acceptable alternative?” the guidance says.

Agents are instructed to process the change as an equal exchange, making the flight change free for travelers.

Fort Lauderdale is approximately 45 miles south of West Palm Beach, while Miami is approximately 72 miles away, giving travelers access to South Florida without setting foot at President Donald J. Trump International Airport.

However, agents are advised to provide “an acceptable alternative,” according to the memo, which suggests that flight changes are always subject to availability and discretionary approval by the airline.

Airlines often do not allow simple changes of destination because the traveler objects to the person the airport is named after.

United is expected to revise its plans as the airport moves from Palm Beach International Airport to President Donald J. Trump International Airport, according to the memo. The airport's commercial passenger code is expected to remain PBI until the IATA code changes to DJT in Aug. 18.

FOX Business has reached out to United for comment.

This comes after angry customers flooded the airport's online complaint form after the terminal was renamed last week in honor of the current president.

The airport said the name change is required by state law and does not affect its ownership, governance or operations.

The airport had posted a message above its comment form acknowledging the name change “may be received differently by our passengers.”

Many customers who responded to the form were outraged by the name change and the airport's disclaimer, with many vowing to boycott the airport, according to NOTUS, which obtained the messages through a public records request.

“It's really funny that you had to add a disclaimer to this form explaining the renaming of your airport after our bigoted, bigoted, bigoted 47th president,” one person wrote.

Another said, “I hope you have more airbags to hold the irons on people as they climb.”

“How do we continue to kneel on the knees of a rogue criminal who calls himself the president?” another wrote.

“I'm writing to assure you that as long as you drive this airport anything remotely related to 'TRUMP' I WILL NOT COME IN THERE. I WILL NOT! You have lost my family's business 100 percent. Despicable move!” another added.

Although airports have been named after other presidents, including former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, Trump is the first to have an airport named after him while in office.
