The £8m Rangers flop looks the worst since Danilo

Glasgow Rangers are six games away from trying to win their first Scottish Premiership title since the 2020/21 campaign under Steven Gerrard.

In the five years since winning the title, the Light Blues have made a number of mistakes with management and recruitment decisions, which is why they have not won the title since the English manager left.

There have been many flops signed by the Scottish giants over the years, going back to Aaron Ramsey, Sam Lammers, and Robin Propper, to name just a few.

Their lack of success in the transfer market has led to them going five years without a title, but Danny Rohl is hopeful that the club's recruitment fortunes could change once he takes over.

The German head coach has had flops in previous reigns at Ibrox, however, and Danilo is one of the players who need to be moved this summer.

How Danilo represents the worst Rangers hire since 2021

The Brazilian striker, without a doubt, represents the club's worst recruitment strategy since 2021 due to the money involved, the concept of the signing, and his results since joining.

Rangers paid £6m to sign him from Feyenoord in the summer of 2023 under Michael Beale, making him their fifth most expensive signing of all time.

The Gers now have new owners in 49ers Enterprises.

However, he was bought in the same summer that the Gers signed Lammers and Cyril Dessers, as Beale wanted to play a 4-3-1-2 formation that never looked the part at Ibrox.

Since signing, Danilo has scored just 16 goals in 76 games for Rangers in all competitions, while missing 48 games through injury in that time.

The 26-year-old striker was loaned out to Dutch side NEC Nijmegen in February, with an option to sign him permanently, but has failed to produce a goal or assist in six league games so far.

Danilo, therefore, represents the club's worst recruitment since they last won the title because he was signed for a hefty £6m fee to replace a manager who was sacked late that year, and has gone on a loan spell.

Rangers have ended up with their worst signing since Danilo

Now, although the Gers may win the title this season, there is a player in the current team who has become the worst player in the team since Danilo.

In the winter window, Rangers caught the eye when they tried to sign Andreas Skov Olsen on loan from Wolfsburg, with an option to sign him permanently for around £8m in the summer.

The Danish international joined the German club 12 months ago for £12m from Club Brugge, after excelling as a goalscorer and creator in Belgium.

Due to his previous signing fee and his form for Club Brugge, there was great excitement when the club secured a deal for his services in January.

Unfortunately, however, the Danish midfielder has scored just one goal in ten games in all competitions for the Light Blues, and is not a regular starter for Rohl.

He has provided three assists in eight games in the Premiership, which isn't a bad return on paper, but these three assists have come at 1.12 xA, indicating that he has benefited from finishing with his teammates.

Earlier this week, Andy Halliday said Slov Olsen is “frustrating to watch” because he passes back and to the flanks too often instead of taking on his man, supported by his 0.6 dribble completions per game.

The left-footed player has been a nightmare in the Premiership, not taking enough risks to win games for his team, and that has left him in a position where it is unlikely the club will pay £8m to sign him permanently.

Rangers are reportedly interested in Motherwell midfielder Elijah Just as they are currently unlikely to sign Skov Olsen at the end of his loan spell.

Therefore, the Wolfsburg loanee is on track to become the club's worst player since Danilo due to the potential fee, the money he signed last year for the German club, and the fearlessness on the pitch in his performance for the Gers.

There is still time left this season for him to turn things around and win the Premiership title for the Light Blues, but at the moment he looks to be finished at Ibrox because of that report on Just and his general form in the club.
