Taylor Farms prepares for recall amid cyclospora outbreak investigation

Fresh produce supplier Taylor Farms is preparing for a recall related to ingredients linked to a multi-state Cyclospora outbreak, according to a Bloomberg News report, as the company says its salad products are not linked to the disease.

Bloomberg, citing a document viewed by the outlet, reported Friday that the California-based manufacturing company told federal regulators it was preparing for a recall linked to a Food and Drug Administration investigation into the outbreak. The extent of any potential recall was not immediately clear, and it was unclear which products could be affected.

Taylor Farms responded Friday in a statement posted on Instagram, saying that none of its salad products are linked to the outbreak and that it is voluntarily removing iceberg lettuce harvested in central Mexico through its Taylor Farms de Mexico operation after receiving information from the FDA.

“As a family-owned and operated company, we are deeply concerned about those who are sick, their families and the many Americans who rely on the safety of their fresh produce,” the company said.

The company added: “No Taylor Farms salads or kits are associated with this outbreak. None of the Taylor Farms-branded salad kits contain iceberg lettuce.”

Taylor Farms said the FDA's follow-up investigation identified what it described as “an isolated farm” representing less than 1% of US iceberg lettuce as the potential source of the outbreak. The company said it has removed all iceberg lettuce from that growing region permanently.

The development comes days after Taco Bell removed lettuce from restaurants in parts of the Midwest after health officials linked illnesses to lettuce used at the restaurant and pointed investigators to one supplier.

Cyclospora is a small parasite that can cause severe diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, fatigue and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
