Pro's 'whirlwind' week started with a dream US Open. Now, he is at risk of something else

Cooper Dossey's week has been a “whirlwind”.
The third-year Korn Ferry Tour finished last week's tournament in Columbia, South Carolina, tied for 27th. Then, he and his brother, his full-time friend Luke, drove to Charlotte and hopped on a plane to Dallas so Cooper could make his most important Monday appointment at the Dallas Athletic Club. They entered the house around twelve o'clock. Cooper Dossey got some sleep, then woke up Monday to qualify for the 2026 US Open at Shinnecock Hills. Dossey finished third in the Dallas class behind medalist Peter Uihlein and Tom Kim, but that was good enough to secure one of the nine spots up for grabs at Shinnecock.

“Definitely a moment I'll never forget,” Dossey told the Korn Ferry Tour ahead of this week's event in Knoxville. “My wife was there, my son, my mother, my cousin, it's unbelievable, I still can't believe it.
“It hasn't come together yet. But I'm thankful for all the people who congratulated me. It definitely makes it feel more real when people around you are congratulating you. It's not just my first major, but a lot of people at the first school in my life, too.”
When Cooper Dossey secured his spot at Shinnecock Hills in three weeks, he had little time to enjoy the achievement of that lifelong goal. Still scrambling to get his PGA Tour card, Cooper and Luke had to fly from Dallas to Atlanta, then rent a car and drive four hours to Knoxville, Tennessee, for this week's Visit Knoxville Open on the Korn Ferry Tour.
In his first two years on the Korn Ferry Tour, Dossey finished 76th and 44th in points. Last year, he entered the final round of Q School with a chance to earn one of the final five cards. However, he shot 5 overs in the final round, meaning he had to return to the Korn Ferry Tour to continue towards his dream.
Dossey is undefeated on the PGA Tour's feeder circuit. He was close. He finished T2 at the Astara Chile Classic earlier this year and is currently 13th in points on the KFT. The top 20 earn their PGA Tour cards for the 2027 season.
After Cooper and Luke Dossey arrived in Knoxville, Cooper rested while Luke went to study. Cooper Dossey opened with a 6-under 65 and backed it up with a 64 on Friday. He entered Saturday's third round one shot behind Doc Redman, but shot a bogey-free 63 to take a two-up lead going into the final round.
A win on Sunday would put Cooper Dossey in a good position to secure his 2027 PGA Tour card. The prospect of achieving two lifelong dreams in a week is difficult for anyone to fathom. But after years of grinding his way to the end of his dreams, Cooper Dossey has found peace. He and his wife recently had a son, and he's happy no matter what the scorecard says. After spending his life digging in the dirt, Cooper Dossey is ready to accept that his dream will come when it's meant to.

“I feel like my life off the golf course is in a better place,” Dossey said Saturday after his round. “I feel like my attitude on the golf course is in a much better place. I'm fine if I was robbed of golf now. I don't think I was fine with that two years ago.
“I want to be on the PGA Tour and I'm very hungry to get there. But I feel like I have a different idea of how to achieve that. Because I can't choose when I get to the PGA Tour, or if I ever do…. I'm ready for whatever happens tomorrow. I'm very happy to have the adrenaline running out there. I'm very happy with Ashley and I'm very happy with my brother. Me, I'm going out at 18 and seeing my wife and my son, if I'm going to be able to hold the trophy.”
Win or lose Sunday, Cooper Dossey already has his next month planned.
That car he rented to get him from Atlanta to Knoxville? You have it for a few more weeks. He will drive from Knoxville to Raleigh. After next week's tournament, he will drive from Raleigh to Greenville. After that event, he will drive back to Atlanta and board a plane to Amarillo. From there, he flies from Amarillo to Shinnecock for his US Open debut.
“It's been a whirlwind,” Dossey told KFT.
One that could change everything for Cooper Dossey.
