Newsom office praises Anthropic 'partnership', California 50% off Claude

California Governor Gavin Newsom is fighting for a national billionaire tax, despite repealing similar legislation in his state.
California state agencies and local governments can access Anthropic's Claude intelligence platform at a 50% discount, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said Monday.
“Through the agreement, federal agencies may access Anthropic's AI production assistant, Claude, at a 50% discounted price, along with free staff training and GenAI technical assistance and workflow installation from Anthropic developers. The agreement also provides a similar discounted offer to California's local governments, including cities and counties,” the press release announced.
“Claude is the first AI productivity tool that will be available to all State agencies though the California Department of Technology's new Statewide Information Technology Shared Services (SITeS) portal. The portal centralizes AI tools in one place with transparent values for key business use cases – such as improving operational efficiency, improving data security, and improving ongoing public employee experience,” the announcement continued.

Newsom, in office since early 2019, is up for re-election this year — he won re-election in 2022 after surviving a reelection bid in 2021.
“This partnership is about using technology the California way: responsibly, transparently, and in the service of the people. AI should not replace the human work of government; it should help our employees to move faster, solve problems more effectively, and deliver better results for the people of California,” the governor said in a statement.
“As a California company, we feel a real responsibility to our state. We are honored to expand our partnership with California agencies and put Claude to work for the people who keep this state running,” said Head of Anthropic of the Americas Kate Jensen. “Building AI responsibly and to help people has been our approach from the beginning, and that's exactly what this partnership is about.”

The governor's office revealed that the state is already using Claude.
“California has already implemented some of Claude's uses in state government, including using the tool to help Engaged California, the nation's first democratic platform announced by Governor Newsom last year, which helps give Californians a stronger voice in policymaking,” the office noted. “Claude was also involved in the development of Poppy State – a simple AI tool designed by public servants for public servants using pre-built, easy-to-use queries to meet common government business needs, promoting more reliable, trustworthy results.
