New York City council members want to decriminalize municipal grocery stores

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday announced another state-run mall, this one set to open in the Bronx next year.
New York City Councilwoman Jennifer Gutiérrez and her colleagues are pushing a proposal to establish at least five municipal grocery stores in each district.
The proposal comes as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration aims to establish one municipal grocery store in each of the Big Apple's five boroughs by the end of his first term.
“Let's make sure it's not something our current mayor is planting, but something we can put in forever,” said Gutiérrez, according to The City Reporter.
Fox News Digital reached out to Gutiérrez's office Friday to request comment from the council member.

The proposal calls for the small business services commission or a separate agency leader appointed by the mayor to build at least five grocery stores in each neighborhood “in consultation or cooperation to the extent practicable with the contracted entity,” according to the measure.
A press release about the mayor's effort earlier this year noted, “The city's grocery plan is designed to reduce daily costs by using public ownership to eliminate costs currently passed on to consumers.”

“This program aims to bring affordable, high-quality groceries that provide meaningful savings to New Yorkers and strengthen food access for neighborhoods throughout the city. Mayor Mamdani has committed a total of $70 million to develop these five locations,” the release notes.
“Under this model, the City will own the land and pay additional costs such as rent and construction. A private operator, selected through a request for proposals, will manage day-to-day operations and is contractually required to pass the savings directly to customers in the main basket of daily necessities,” the release explained.
