Liverpool set to raid £100,000-a-week Chelsea after Iraola bid

Liverpool have identified Chelsea star Levi Colwill as a dream transfer target, with Andoni Iraola keen to sign the midfielder this summer.

The Reds have already brought in a new midfielder, with Jeremy Jacquet arriving at Anfield, but following the departure of Ibrahima Konate, another option may be needed, with Colwill being considered.

That comes despite the 23-year-old missing most of the 2025-26 campaign with an ACL injury, which saw him make just three Premier League appearances.

However, the English coach was an integral part of the Blues back line in the 2024-25 season, appearing 35 times in the Premier League, during which time he averaged 6.3 defensive contributions out of 90, which was the third highest number in the club.

The Chelsea defender, who was called “outstanding” by Liam Rosenior, also achieved 66.5 accurate passes out of 90, which shows his ability to handle the ball. For reference, Virgil van Dijk averaged 65.4 last term, while Konate averaged 56.4.

With a solid five-game England international's defensive ability and ability to pass, he could tick a lot of boxes for Iraola, who likes it when his teams can get the ball up quickly, according to BBC Radio Solent's Jordan Clark.

Clark says: “High pressure – it kicks the opponent all the time. And on the other hand, if you have to defend, it's about getting yourself back on the field quickly.”

Liverpool are planning a move for Levi Colwill

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Iraola is looking for a new defender ahead of the new season, and Colwill is one of Liverpool's dreams.

The Reds are planning a move for the £100,000-a-week Chelsea defender, and will make a move if he is available. However, as things stand, Xabi Alonso's have little interest in sanctioning a move.

Aston Villa star Ezri Konsa and Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven have been mentioned as other possible options, and bringing in a new defender could be important, with Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni still recovering from injury.

Which defender should Liverpool sign?

Levi Colwill

Liverpool's interest in Colwill is understandable, given that he has managerial ability, and was a key player for Chelsea before his ACL injury. However, the former Brighton & Hove Albion man could be a dangerous addition, as he was limited to just 225 minutes of game time in the Premier League last season.

Ezri Konsa

On the other hand, Konsa was a reliable option for Villa last season, making 48 appearances in all competitions. After that, the 28-year-old continued to be a key player for England at the World Cup, playing in all eight matches. As such, if Iraola wants to bring in an experienced defender, the 28-cap England star could be a solid option.

Micky van de Ven

Van de Ven also has Premier League experience, having played 75 games in the competition for Tottenham. Furthermore, Van Dijk knows him well, as they are teammates at international level. That said, Spurs finished 17th for two seasons on spin, and conceded 57 goals last season, raising questions about whether the Dutchman would be a good signing for Liverpool.

The Reds are also keen to strengthen at the other end of the pitch, and are ready to make a bid for AS Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Bradley Barcola is also interested, but the European champions are likely to hold out for £145m, which is likely to be rejected.
