Jim Furyk to captain 2027 US Ryder Cup team in Ireland: Report

For a long time, it looked like 2027 would be the year 15-time major champion Tiger Woods finally captained the US Ryder Cup team. Instead, the one-time winner is expected to play the role of captain America for the second time.
According to the report of The Associated Press, Jim Furyk will be named the 2027 US Ryder Cup captain for next year's event in Ireland.
AP sources say Furyk will captain the US Ryder Cup again in 2027
When the 2027 Ryder Cup starts at Adare Manor next September, the European team will have a repeat captain in the form of Luke Donald, who has led his team to back-to-back victories.
The American team will have a repeat captain as well, albeit one with a Ryder Cup resume.
'We support his decision': Tiger Woods declines US Ryder Cup captaincy, PGA says

The AP reported Friday morning that “three people with knowledge of the selection process said the Ryder Cup committee chose Furyk when Tiger Woods withdrew from the tournament after his March 27 arrest on DUI charges.”
The PGA of America did not immediately respond to GOLF.com's inquiry for this report.
The American team has lost twice in a row in this annual event. In 2023, the Americans lost in a different way in Rome 16.5-11.5 with Zach Johnson as captain.
At last year's Ryder Cup, Keegan Bradley was named captain of the US Ryder Cup in a surprising and controversial move by the PGA of America, which runs the American team. The bold choice did not work out.
The American team was humiliated in the first two days at Bethpage Black while the American fans humiliated themselves and threw shame on the European players and their families. An exciting return on Sunday left the final score for Europe, 15; US, 13.
Jim Furyk's experience as US Ryder Cup captain
Furyk has a solid playing career. In a long PGA Tour career, he captured 17 Tour wins, including victory at the 2003 US Open at Olympia Fields.
He also played on nine different US Ryder Cup teams. More importantly, he has one very important type of experience: Furyk served as the US Ryder Cup captain at the 2018 event in France.
Unfortunately, that first experience may not give American golf fans much hope. With Furyk as captain, the American team was defeated by Europe 17.5-10.5 at Le Golf National and Furyk's captain's choice went 2-10-0.
Furyk also served as Keegan Bradley's vice-captain last year when the Americans lost to Bethpage Black and in 2023 when the US lost in Rome. He was also vice-captain in the US Ryder Cup final victory in 2021.
1 best for Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk
While Furyk's first outing as Ryder Cup captain in 2018 didn't end well, there is one area of recent experience that supports his captaincy argument.
In 2024, Furyk once again played the role of American captain, but not in the Ryder Cup. Furyk instead captained the US Presidents Cup team – with good results.
The American team beat the International team 18.5-11.5. It also happened on outdoor soil at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada. The 2027 US Ryder Cup team will likewise play an away match in Ireland.
Of course, the events of the two groups are not the same. While Europe has dominated the Ryder Cup in recent decades, the American team has a 13-1-1 record in the Presidents Cup.
