The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Thursday that it will implement a program reduction Chicago's IO'Hare International Airport after airlines serving the airport planned to increase flights despite significant levels of cancellations and delays.
IO'Hare is the busiest airport in the US based on aircraft capacity and was scheduled for more than 3,080 flights on the peak days of summer 2026, an increase of 14.9% from the peak days of summer 2025 when just 60% of arrivals and departures were on time.
The FAA's schedule reduction will limit O'Hare's daily operations to 2,708 flights to prevent a dramatic increase from last summer's daily schedule in an effort to prevent a high volume of delays and cancellations. The flight restrictions will be in effect from May 17 to Oct. 24, 2026.
“When you book a ticket, we want you and your family to be sure that you will fly without endless delays and cancellations,” it said. Transport Secretary Sean Duffywho added that the FAA will follow the same template it used at one of the busiest airports in the country as it seeks to streamline operations at O'Hare.

“Employing that same strategy at O'Hare — where ridiculous schedules are set to go beyond what they could handle — will reduce delays and make this busy summer travel time easier,” he said.
