Expect The Toronto Maple Leafs To Be Active

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to be the talk of the town in the offseason. After hiring Mats Sundin as the Senior Advisor of Hockey Operations and John Chayka as the new general manager, the Maple Leafs traded Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers for Samuel Ersson and Emil Andrae.

Both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers Could Benefit from Their Hockey Trades

Then, on Wednesday, June 17th, the Maple Leafs hired Jim Hiller as their next coach. Chayka and Sundin want to turn this team into a playoff team as soon as possible. They opened up $5 million in cap space with work to retool the blue line and forward group.

We know the Toronto Maple Leafs have the first overall pick next Friday in the 2026 NHL Draft. Given what they have done, nothing can be avoided, although they are expected to take Gavin McKenna in the first place. Anyway the NHL and Free Agency is the last we hear of the Maple Leafs

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman joined SiriusXM NHL Network Radio Morning Skate with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin and was asked: given what the Toronto Maple Leafs have done over the past few days, will they continue this offseason?

The Philadelphia Flyers May Be Done With Work, And You Want Two Extensions Done

Scott Laughlin: “Do you expect Friedge, because we saw the deal with Philadelphia, and I like Philly's deal in what they got in other free pieces, and a backup at least in Joseph Woll, who is better than what they had. He obviously adds size and body, and Simon Benoit.

The Leafs get, as John Chayka puts it, an option, which means, in other words, less consideration and more, more money to spend. Do you expect this team, apart from being on the clock when they are selected for the first time next Friday night, to be very active here in the coming weeks?”

Elliotte Friedman: “I am, because that move , like they put out $5 million. I think Andrae will play for them. I'm not so sure about Ersson. Ersson has an arb case, right? So, he's probably going to come in. I was asking somebody yesterday; his qualifying offer is $1.4 million, I think, his case might be $1 million in that area. $3 million.

Someone was telling me. So I am not sure if they will be suitable for him. I'm not sure, and if you saw the scrum or Zoom yesterday with Chayka, it proved he wasn't. They didn't commit one way or the other, so that's very flexible. I think we should expect almost anything.”

NHL Rumors: Chicago Blackhawks, and Toronto Maple Leafs

It will be interesting to see what the Leafs do with Ersson. Can they replace him with another property or do they not deserve him? If they didn't suit him, then a trade was a waste of money for Woll. Also, it's hard to judge a trade until the dust settles.

However, the Toronto Maple Leafs are doing everything they can to keep Auston Matthews moving forward. It is clear that John Chayka is restructuring the team in his vision.
