A kidnapped girl was rescued over the weekend when her captor crashed her car in Ohio, prompting police to respond.
The victim, who is only 12 years old, was saved from it Virgil Larson, Jr.explained the police in a statement.
A one-car accident happened Sunday, April 5, in Hocking County along US 33.
Witnesses to the accident called 911 to report the accident.
The police came and spoke with Larson, and soon found out that he was a sex offender. They also talk to the girl he was traveling with.
When conflicting information was provided by the two, deputies dug around and discovered that the girl had been reported missing from her home in North Carolina the night before.
Hocking County Sheriff Lanny E. North he said the investigators suspect that Larson had lured the girl on social media with a fake incident where he presented himself as a boy her age.
As part of this plan, the boy would ask his father to pick him up and accompany him to a place that was not disclosed to the girl.
After the accident, the victim was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. It was not clear what Larson's intentions were for kidnapping the child.
Larson, 45, was arrested and booked into the Southeast Ohio County Jail and is facing charges of kidnapping and resisting arrest. His bond was set at $1 million for the kidnapping charge and $10,000 for resisting arrest.
A hearing is scheduled for April 15. No pleas were entered on his behalf, and an attorney of record was not listed for Larson.
This year there have been many cases of kidnappings in states across the country.
