Aston Villa open talks to sign Man Utd midfielder after Tielemans sacking

Aston Villa have now attempted to sign another midfielder, after poaching Newcastle United from SC Freiburg's Johan Manzambi.

Newcastle had hoped to sign Manzambi, but Villa made a last-minute move to secure his signing, with Fabrizio Romano confirming a verbal agreement was in place.

Personal terms have also been agreed, with the Freiburg star seemingly confirming a move to Emiliano Martinez after Switzerland were knocked out of the World Cup by Argentina in the quarter-finals.

However, Villa have no plans to stop there, with the newly emerged Premier League midfielder a target.

Aston Villa plan to swoop for Man Utd midfielder

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Aston Villa have now made contact with Manchester United over a deal for Mason Mount, but it could be difficult to get a deal on this line.

Michael Carrick remains a huge fan of the Englishman, who earns £150,0000-a-week, and the Red Devils are not interested in sanctioning a sale.

Honesty

Villa have been keen to strengthen their options in the middle of the park this summer, with the late signing of Manzambi set to be completed. However, the need to sign a new midfielder has been exacerbated by the news that Man United are closing in on Youri Tielemans, so signing Mount would be a good idea.

Finance

That said, any deal for the Englishman would be an expensive undertaking, considering he joined from Chelsea for £60m back in 2023. Furthermore, wages could be an issue, with none of Villa's current players earning more than £150,000-a-week.

Understanding

Hailed as “unbelievable” by Umir Irfan of BBC Sport, the 27-year-old has established himself at international level, collecting 36 caps for England, and has 56 goals in 183 Premier League appearances to his name.

Impact

With Ross Barkley set to extend his stay at Villa Park until the end of next season, it would be vital for Unai Emery to sign an attacking midfielder this summer, and Mount has the necessary experience to fill a strong position.

How does Mason Mount compare to Ross Barkley

At 27, the Man United midfielder is five years younger than Barkley, and there are signs that he could be more formidable than the Villa star from a defensive point of view.

Last season, Mount averaged 5.3 recoveries and 2.1 tackles per 90 in the Premier League, compared to figures of 4.8 and 1.5 from his compatriot.

However, Barkley has fared better from an attacking perspective, averaging 0.32 goals per 90, slightly more than the United star's average of 0.27.

In fact, these midfielders are both evenly matched. However, there may be doubts about Mount's fitness given that he has only played 54 Premier League games since signing for Man United due to a number of injuries.
