Canada is issuing a warning to travelers to use a high level of caution in Morocco

One of America's neighbors is warning travelers about security risks in their North African destination, raising red flags for US citizens as well.
Known for its historic cities, bustling markets and ancient sites, Morocco is the subject of an updated travel advisory from the Government of Canada.
The country draws tourists from around the world to the neighborhoods of Marrakech and the Medina, camel treks in the Sahara desert, historic cities such as Fez and coastal areas such as Essaouira – but new warnings highlight the potential dangers.

Canadian officials on Tuesday urged travelers to be extra cautious in an updated advisory.
The notice warns of petty crime, armed robbery and credit and debit card fraud, as well as “terrorism and attacks targeting foreigners.”

The travel warning also urges travelers to avoid areas near the Algerian-Moroccan border “due to increased military activity, the unstable security situation and the difficulty of finding the exact location of the border.”

The warning is not limited to remote areas.
“Maintain a high level of vigilance at all times.”
The advisory also notes that protests, often near government buildings in major cities such as Rabat and Casablanca, “could turn violent at any time.”

It adds, “It could also lead to traffic and public transport disruptions.”
Canada's advice is broadly in line with the US State Department, which has also listed Morocco as a Level 2 area, urging travelers to be extra cautious.

The warning this week also warned of the “threat of Western hostages” in Morocco, especially in remote areas and in the border areas of Algeria and Mauritania.

“Maintain a high level of vigilance at all times, especially when traveling in southern areas and on the Moroccan border,” the advisory notes. “Don't go alone to remote places in the mountains.”

Earlier this month, US officials issued an advisory on Albania, a budget-friendly area on the Adriatic coast, citing tensions related to Iran.
