San Francisco's population is still below 2020 levels, census data shows

San Francisco's population has not recovered since the outbreak, according to a new report.

“The population of the San Francisco metro area failed to grow again by 2025, despite the rise of AI,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported in March. “Unlike every other major metro in the country, that left the region's population below its 2020 level, according to recently released U.S. Census estimates.”

“The number of residents in the city of San Francisco, which includes the East Bay, Peninsula and Marin County, was 2.6% lower in July 2025 than in April 2020, the most recent data show,” the report continued. “Among metro areas of more than 1.5 million people, that population loss was exceeded only by Los Angeles, which fell by 2.7%.

The city has been plagued by housing shortages, rising crime, and rising costs of living over the past few years. Former residents described finding a better quality and cost of living outside the Bay Area, where housing shortages and housing costs have skyrocketed.

The city is trying to make a comeback by changing its political landscape after moderates ousted progressives from leadership.

The city elected Lurie in 2024, defeating Democrat London Breed to remove soft policies on crime, drugs and homelessness that critics say have contributed to the city's decline.

Moderate Democrats in San Francisco are pushing back on candidates, fearing that left-leaning local politicians could undo the work done four years ago after the attacks on the city. homelessness and crime.

“However, it's not like the Bay Area's population has been plagued,” the Chronicle reported. “After the decline in 2022, population growth in both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas has slowed, and even slightly increased. Similarly, population change in Los Angeles has generally decreased to a very low level.”
