Nicole Kidman remembers hearing about her mother's death before the Venice Film Festival

Nicole Kidman opens up about the day she found out her mother died.
The 58-year-old actress spoke at the live speaker series, HISTORYTalks 2026, hosted by the History Channel, on Saturday about many things, including learning about her mother's death shortly before accepting the best actress award for “Babygirl” at the Venice Film Festival in September 2024.
“I'm going to win best actor at the Venice Film Festival. This seems to be a common theme in my life,” he said, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I was about to go on stage, and I found out that my mother had died. I went back to the room in Venice, got into bed and was completely devastated.”
He recalled feeling like he didn't know how he would be able to go on without his mother, saying, “She was a part of my life. The idea of being there at that time was painful.”

The “Big Little Lies” star went on to say that “the idea of being there at that time was painful,” and began taking steps to leave Venice as soon as possible.
“I remember getting on a boat in the canal, and at night trying to find my way to the airport, and then I turn around and go, I can't even do this,” she said. “Then I went back to bed, alone. My husband wasn't there. My children weren't there. I was going to win a medal. What was supposed to be a good thing, ended up being that. But there is a difference in life.”
After going through the ordeal on her own, Kidman says she now tells people “that's when I know I'm resilient,” and “I can survive almost anything.”
Kidman's mother, Janelle, died in September 2024 at the age of 84.

Two years after her mother's death, the Academy Award-winning actress shared with investigative reporter Vicky Nguyen, as part of the private school series Silk Speaker, that she plans to become a death doula.
“When my mother passed away, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could do,” Kidman said. San Francisco Chronicle. “Between me and my sister we have many children and our jobs and our work, and we want to take care of him because my father was no longer in the world, and that's when I went, 'I wish there were these people in the world who would sit neutrally and give comfort and care.'

Kidman shares two daughters – Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 15 – with her ex-husband, Keith Urban, while her sister, Antonia, has six children.
The actress has spoken about her closeness with her mother many times over the years, she said Sydney Morning Herald about how her mother always pushed her to pursue her dreams, saying, “she carved her own path and she wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths.”

“My mother couldn't find the job she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have equal opportunities,” added Kidman. “That gave me my life. And she gave me my life, her and my father.”

Kidman is following in her mother's footsteps as a supportive mother, as she supports her daughter, Sunday Rose, in her budding modeling career.
She made her runway debut at Paris Fashion Week in 2025, walking for Miu Miu.
