House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., criticized Democrats on Sunday for accusing President Donald Trump of hijacking America's 250th anniversary celebration for political and financial gain, saying the attacks show more hatred for the president than love for the country.

“[Democrats] it's better for Donald Trump to fail and for America to fail than to celebrate the achievements of our founding fathers and the fact that we are the greatest nation in the world,” Comer told “The Big Weekend Show.”

“We are the greatest nation in the history of the world. Anyone can be anything in America because of the sacrifices of our founding fathers, the sacrifices of our soldiers, the sacrifices of our American heroes, and that's what last night was about.”

“I think what they will do if they change the House and become a majority in the House is investigate and harass Donald Trump,” said House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., following allegations by Democrats that President Trump “hijacked” America's 250th birthday celebration for his own benefit. Comer's comments came after Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, issued a 55-page report accusing Trump of turning the America 250 celebration into a party spectacle to advance his political and religious agenda.

“[This follows] months of investigative work by Committee Democrats exposing how Donald Trump hijacked what was supposed to be an inclusive, non-political celebration of our nation's 250th birthday and made it all about him – his vanity projects, his political and religious agenda, his businesses, and his cronies who siphon public money under the cover of a secret agency report.

Specifically, the release accused the Trump administration of creating a “shadow organization” Freedom 250 LLC and making it a central part of the celebrations after the America 250 Commission “refused to bend to the President's demands.”

It alleges that the group is using the nation's semiquincentennial to sell access to Trump, redirecting donor money meant for America250 and enriching Trump allies with lucrative contracts.

Some Democrats have signaled that the effort could face scrutiny from Congress if Democrats regain a majority in the House in November.

“I believe it will be so [investigated],” Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., told MS NOW on Friday.

Comer rejected the Democrats' criticism and said it was related to politics, saying that the group wanted to investigate Trump rather than look at things that make sense.

“Oversight is at the forefront,” he said, responding to Democratic Rep. Brendan Boyle insists that oversight will come if the Democrats win.

“We investigate waste, fraud and abuse. That's what the Oversight Committee is all about…” he added.

“President Trump focused on honoring our heroes and being proud to be an American, and all the Democrats want to do is, 'If you vote for us, we're going to impeach Trump for wasting money on a private celebration, in a way, that spoke of Christianity, even though our country was founded by people who wanted religious freedom.' So this is a good example for the Democrats, and I think all they will do if they reform the House and become the majority in the House is investigate and harass Donald Trump. “
